Violence and poverty

Why T/MC’s work mattered: poverty, violence and the neighborhoods where young people needed more caring adults. Dan Bassill tracked the news and mapped shootings and poverty against the programs that existed.

Items are matched by the words they use, so a few may mention the subject only in passing; the most relevant come first.

  • 2000-09-16 Received minutes of Aug 15 Youth Development Implementation Team from the PreventViolence!Chicago task force. In these one member was quoted as "concerned that there is not much concrete to report" at planned October Summit. I met with this group in Aug 99 and outlined the T/MC plan. This resulted in more signatures for the Campaign Manifesto, Dan Devine sponsoring the Nov 99 conf, and workshops on Juvenile Justice being a the Nov 99 and May 2000 conference. It did not result in this group embracing the T/MC strategy as there strategy. Thus, today I emailed Katherine Klimisch who is the liason to Sister Sheila Lyne, Head of PreventViolence!Chicago, and encouraged her to nudge the connection with the T/MC along.
  • 2000-09-18 Peggy Kelly of State's Attorney's office called. They cannot fund conference, but will purchase 30 directories. I asked her to consider the following: a) make a list of 100 people who supported the Balanced & Restorative Justice Law in Illinois, and send note to them each time we do an event asking them to support T/MC; b) send us that list for our mail list; c) send letters to other agencies to encourage them to order directories as well; d) lobby the PreventViolence!Chicago group to follow T/MC strategy. She liked the ideas and agreed to pursue them with her boss, Sister Kathleen Ryan.
  • 2000-09-22 Sent letter to Sharon M. Shipinski of the Center for Research in Law and Justice at UIC. I included a TQM chart showing the various programs the legal community supports as separate projects, but which all converge in a neighborhood as services intended to help kids and families. Some of these are balanced & restorative justice, juvenil justice, violence prevention, etc.
  • 2000-12-14 Reid met with Robert Bryant, General Manager of Barbara's Bookstores (Mayuba Bookstores, Inc.) and John Hastie, Marketing and Events Manager to discuss T/MC Recruitment Campaign and Public Awareness strategies. They committed
  • 2001-01-10 Contacted Rockwell-Grant Youth Project as part of our outreach efforts. Rockwell-Grant is listed in our directory. Learned that they are looking at some changes to the program, primarily focusing its services more on youth as opposed to the entire family, as before. This will allow them to serve more youth. Also, because of violence in Rockwell Gardens, it makes outreach into the community difficult and dangerous. The program is primarily in-school and there's a need for day time mentors & tutors.
  • 2001-02-13 Attended the Prevent Violence! Chicago committee meeting for Dan. Discussion at the meeting included plans for a mentor training put on by Susan McGee at Big Brothers for faith-based groups. I sent them two contact names of people from two churches that contacted us for help. The committee also decided to put the public awareness campaign about mentoring on hold. The meeting last only about 35 minutes. In a related note, I forwarded Katherine K.'s name (she's with the Chicago Department of Public Health) to Rebekah C. at the Independent Features Project as a contact about youth video programs. Katherine is working with a group that has a cable show.
  • 2001-03-02 The PreventViolcence!Chicago initiative purchased 12 Directories to use in a March 9 Faith Based training. They will pass on names of participants to T/MC for the data base. T/MC sent faith strategy to them for circulation in themeeting.
  • 2001-05-22 New Concepts Tutor/Mentor Connection, an agency that has formed with much T/MC support, has posted this message on their site: We're working with organizations like the Tutor/Mentor Connection (T/MC) to develop holistic solutions to help youth living in poverty neighborhoods throughout the Chicago region get the adult support they need to move to a career. We've borrowed our name and many of our working concepts from the T/MC, and we encourage other organizations and communities to consider a similar strategy. Visit the www.tutormentorconnection.org site for maps and charts illustrating this vision.
  • 2001-07-17 Attended PreventViolence!Chicago planning meeting. About a dozen other organizations, mostly government agencies, were present. Meeting resulted in a commiment to do some new "strategic planning" to define goals of the group.
  • 2001-08-31 Jeff Curto, an IWU Acacia member, saw the IWU press release telling of Dan Bassill's recognition and sent the following emil to the ACACIA egroup (more than 50 members). "Brothers; Those who know Dan know that he works tirelessly and without ceasing to help inner city kids find their way out of poverty and towards active, productive, educated lives. Dan Bassill embodies "Human Service" at its best. Dan's done this for a LONG time, often with little recognition. An award like this, while not the extra $$ that Dan needs to make his programs GO, likely goes some distance to help him keep up the fight. Suggestion: take a look in your pocket RIGHT NOW and send Dan a check for whatever you can spare.. even if it's "not much"... EVERYTHING helps.
  • 2001-09-05 Received following email from Mahesh N. Alur, PhD Candidate, Northwestern University Medical School. He contacted T/MC on 9/1 and offered to raise money for Cabrini Connections through his running in the Chicago Marathon. The email was sent to his friends: Dear Family, Friends, and Colleagues, As some of you know, I am running in my first marathon on October 7, 2001, in Chicago! I thought that this race would be a great opportunity to raise some money for a cause that has become increasingly important to me. During the past year, I tutored an eighth grade student who attended St. Joseph's and lives in the Cabrini Green Housing Project. I found it to be a very rewarding experience, and I believe that a small fundraising campaign would help tremendously a program, the community, and most significantly, the students who deserve the educational opportunities that most of us were fortunate to receive. Cabrini Connections is very similar to the program in which I participated. Not only does it provide tutoring by bringing together working professionals and students from educationally disadvantaged environments, it also attempts to coordinate tutoring across Chicago and the country. It does this by using the internet coupled with marketing and advertising approaches in order to expand outreach and knowledge on issues of poverty and education. The idea is that each tutoring program can learn from each others' experiences in how to reach students and how to attract volunteers. In fact, Cabrini Connections was the organization that helped me to find the tutoring opportunity at St. Joseph's at this time last year. I know that most of you on this e-mail list are of meager means (financially-speaking), but even small donations will be extremely helpful. For those of you who would like to donate a larger amount, all donations to Cabrini Connections are tax deductible. Please do not feel obligated to donate, but if you would like to support me -- and more importantly, these students -- your donation would be met by my undying gratitude. Additionally, please pass this message along to people who I may have missed or to others who would be interested in donating. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me.
  • 2001-10-04 Jim Cory has added a new map to the T/MC GIS web site, showing two shootings that took place on Sept. 29th. I emailed the GIS group, and two reporters (Mary Smerch at Tribune and Laura Washington, The Chicago Reporter) with an encouragement to look at the maps and tell others to do the same.
  • 2001-10-18 Provided info about T/MC and its resources to Lori Deruga of the Safe to Learn Grant program (a part of the Illinois Violence Prevention Program). Lori came to our HQ and picked up conference material to distribute to her school-based network.
  • 2002-01-06 A set of six maps that show poverty areas in Chicago are now on the GIS web site. These maps show schools on the November State Board of Education warning list, and tutor/mentor programs. We’ve broken the maps down by the time of day the service is available and the age group served. Our maps show many more programs available during the 3-5 time frame when most workplace volunteers are not able to participate in comprehensive tutor/mentor programs. Our maps show fewer programs for high school youth, which is a contributing factor to the high dropout rate of teens. I emailed reporters, columist, editorial people, etc. at the Tribune, SunTimes and WGN Radio to encourage them to use these maps in 2002 stories.
  • 2002-01-15 Dan Bassill attended Job Corps briefing hosted by Joint Center for Poverty Research. This is new Chicago resource that I was not aware of. Their poverty briefs focus on the same issues that T/MC focuses on. I've added them as TME link and sent email to open collaboration. Also at the meeting were an aid to Senator Durban of Illinois, , James Jones of Child Serve, Jan DeCoursey of Chapin Hall, and a Kids' Connection volunteer who works for the Chicago Job Development Department.
  • 2002-01-17 Margaret Grieco, Visiting Fellow, Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge, UK, posted this message to Global Knowledge Development list: The internet can be used to empower those previously by-passed in decision making processes. The poverty mapping of Chicago (T/MC) is an excellent example. Volunteers in disadvantaged communities can map their experience and regularly update and display it and grow conscious of the overall framework which has historically restricted them." This was part of a longer message. I emailed a follow u p intro and offer to work together to develop GIS resourses more groups could use.
  • 2002-03-07 A T/MC letter to the editor mailed to www.directionsmag.com, titled Mapping Solutions to Poverty, can be found in the on-line version of this magazine.
  • 2002-03-07 The West Coast Alumni Newsletter of Columbia College Chicago has the following article in the Vol. 1, #9 issue (2002): MAKE A DIFFERENCE Not many people will make an impact on a child's life the way a tutor/mentor can. Thanks to thousands of volunteers, a growing number of underprivileged students are getting help to succeed in school and go on to find rewarding careers. Chicago's Cabrini Connections is a leader in this movement. For many years Columbia College students and faculty have helped this organization mobilize volunteers, business partners, and philanthropists to support tutor/mentor programs in every poverty area of Chicago. Through the Internet it shares this strategy with the world.
  • 2002-03-12 Attended Advisory Council meeting of Junior League of Chicago. Offered input on Strategic Planning, and on future growth of "Next step for Teen Moms" mentoring program, which is a "signature project" for JLC. I'm one of about 20 members of this Advisory Councile. At meeting set stage for meeting of President of JLC and 2-3 other key leaders, to look for ways for JLC to adopt T/MC as partner and strategy intended to help JLC reach its key goals.
  • 2002-03-13 The Lend A Hand Council of the Chicago Bar Foundation met today. There is nearly $65,000 available for 2002 grants to one-on-one tutor/mentor programs (for grants, Demetrrio Award and Searns Family Foundation Match). While a schedule of review was discussed, the bigger issue was the announcement that the Strategic Planning Committee of the Chicago Bar Foundation had decided that Lend A Hand was not a core strategy and that the fund raising (and grant giving) would not be continued in the present format in 2003. This led to the beginning of what will be an on-going conversation among LAH council members intended to keep the program alive and growing. Many commitments were made, including one from Mike Demetrio of Corboy & Dimetrio, to continue to provide resource for the program to continue.
  • 2002-03-26 Email mining led to email contact with Chris Winters, who leads on-line GIS mapping at the University of Chicago, Arianna Huffington, who writes a syndicated newspaper column, Anne Roosevelt, Community Affairs Director at Boeing World Headquarters, Speaker Dennis Hastert of the US Congress, and a variety of others.
  • 2002-04-24 Met with Nancy Snyder, incoming president of the Junior League of Chicago, and JLC officers, Carol E. Poynter, and Daniel Kenney. Offered collaboration and partner strategies that would strengthen T/MC and help JLC achieve its long-term plan.
  • 2002-08-11 The Tutor/Mentor Connection was invited to do a television interview about the 2002 Volunteer Tutor/Mentor Recruitment Campaign on Chicago's local ABC news network.
  • 2002-09-03 Taped segments of three TV programs to be shown 9/15, 9/22 and 9/27 on the International Sunday School TV Program of Fellowship Baptist Church in Chicago. This will show at 7am each Sunday on Cable TV 25.
  • 2002-09-16 Spoke with Jon Schmidt, head of Service Learning for CPS. Set meeting for 9/23. I first met Jon in 1993 when he was leader of the Afters School Action Program (ASAP) in Uptown and I was creating the T/MC. ASAP was a key partner with T/MC and the agency continues to take a lead role in supporting tutor/mentor program growth in that part of Chicago. The organization is now the Y outh Net representative in that area. I had lost contact with Jon for about 4 years and we reconnected when he responded to a message I posted on the K-12 Service Learning discussion list.
  • 2002-10-31 Virginia Peoples of the Beaumont Foundation and Dan B. of the Tutor/Mentor Connection brainstormed via phone of the many ways that the two organizations could work together. Cabrini Connections has received a grant for $13,000 worth of hardware and will work with Beaumont and other organizations to maximize the impact of this donation.
  • 2002-11-06 The Cabrini Connections Kids' Connection was recognized as a Promising Practice at the First Youth Council Forum for the Chicago Metropolitan Region precented by the YOuth Councils of the Workforce Boards of Metropolitan Chicago. Kourtney Cockrell represented CC at the event. Dan followed up on Wednesday and emailed to the 8 Workforce Boards an introduction to the T/MC and and invitation to work together.
  • 2002-11-19 The Illinois Department of Human Services and the Illinois State Board of Education released a report titled "The Illinois After-school Initiative 2002 Task Force Report". Dan Bassill, president of Cabrini Connections, was a member of this task force.
  • 2002-12-22 I did a search on Google under key words "poverty mentoring" and found many organizations around the world with great programs and great information. Over two days I sent email introductions to more than 23 groups. I added a few of these to the T/MC web site and invited all to load their info on the T/ME site. Most will be added to the T/MC Report email distribution.

  • 2004-03-10 Dan Bassill of T/MC met with Bruce Ives and John Jiang of Metro Chicago Information Center to review T/MC uses of GIS maps, the T/MC strategy, and ways T/MC and MCIC could work together to make interactive maps more available to help communities build and sustain more and better programs to help youth move to careers and address other issues of poverty.
  • 2004-03-12 Met with Hillary Duff, Director of Marketing for the Tsunami Foundation. This is a new organization in Chicago that seeks to recruit business professionals to be mentors who help youth move to careers in specific fields. I reviewed strategies the organization might uses to help comprehensive tutor/mentor programs grow in all poverty neighborhoods. Also illustrated resources available via T/MC web sites and invited Hillary and her group to take a role in key events such as the annual recruitment campaign.
  • 2004-05-02 On May 1 I emailed members of the GIS group and requested a map showing the location of the Chicago school where Girl Gangs were terrorizing students and faculty. This was featured on the front page of the Chicago Sun Times. On May 2, Jim Cory, from Madison, Wisconsin, sent me the map. On May 5th this map was available in the Program Locator section of www.tutormentorexchange.net and I was sending copies to media for follow up stories.
  • 2004-05-06 T/MC contacted by the Center for Educational REsources and Outreach in Newton, MA. They requested permission to include a T/MC GIS map that they found at www.tutormentorconnection.org in a "series of academic cources for secondary students that provide opportunities to learn in real-world contexts". This map will be used in a module titled Wealth of Nations. Permission was granted.

They liked what they saw, and I've been given the go ahead to move forward. Next week I'll be meeting with the VP under whose auspices the proposed program would fall. Thank you for encouraging me to move forward with this concept. It looks like we're making progress. Should you have any other guidance to share (once your hands aren't so full), I'll be ready to listen. By the way, the Harriet Barlowe piece really struck pay dirt because our CEO is actually from NY and was very familiar with her work.
