Similar to the various tutoring programs that have been in operation at Cabrini. And between students at IIT and the kids at Stateway. Will very much be helped if it can be assisted by the Internet. Nelda? Elliott Donnelley? Crispus Attucks? Raymond? DeLaSalle? Phillips? Lots of resources to be connected. What is the most effective way of raising awareness, and aggregating and informing demand? Perhaps there could be a delegation from the Stateway community that could attend the Tutor Mentor conference. Might be a very good idea. Perhaps Phillip Jackson could be helpful in this area. Sounds like something in which he would have a real interest.
- 09/15/00 0 Contacted by Frances Roehm <roehf@nslsilus.org> who wrote: I saw your posting on Digital Divide. I'm a librarian at Skokie Public Library, and have concerns about all of our folks having access to the tools and information they need. My particular focus is the development of our online neighbor-hood (http://www.skokienet.org) and job site (http://www.chicagojobs.org). Please tell me more about the Cabrini Connections. Are you developing a mentoring project for the kids? Are you creating online content for folks in the community?

- 09/16/00 0 Received minutes of Aug 15 Youth Development Implementation Team from the PreventViolence!Chicago task force. In these one member was quoted as "concerned that there is not much concrete to report" at planned October Summit. I met with this group in Aug 99 and outlined the T/MC plan. This resulted in more signatures for the Campaign Manifesto, Dan Devine sponsoring the Nov 99 conf, and workshops on Juvenile Justice being a the Nov 99 and May 2000 conference. It did not result in this group embracing the T/MC strategy as there strategy. Thus, today I emailed Katherine Klimisch who is the liason to Sister Sheila Lyne, Head of PreventViolence!Chicago, and encouraged her to nudge the connection with the T/MC along.

She liked the ideas and agreed to pursue them with her boss, Sister Kathleen Ryan.
- 09/18/00 0 Received email from April Foley, Mt Prospect, Il. Mentor program which said: I talked with our Village Clerk about having a proclamation done for Tutor/Mentor Week. - 09/18/00 0 Received email from from: Greg Skibinski Director of Prevention Services Children's Home in Peoria. He wrote: I would really appreciate it if you were able to come down to Peoria for a day, I promise to make the trip worth your while. I had a chance to meet with Sue Kingery and informed her of what was going on. She stated that she would be talking with you soon to let you know that Peoria's Promise is no longer meeting and the United Way's volunteer Center would be taking over.I'm not sure what all this means yet. I also talked and invited Billie Block to meet with us as well and she stated that she is interested as well as several other youth orientated groups in Peoria. I also like what you have said about momentum. I feel that Peoria has been staying still, but not going anywhere. i would like to change that. I feel that if you were able to come down and share with us what you have done this would provide us with the needed momentum. I will be encouraging those that have the internet to check out your website in the meantime.

The grant's goal is to help libraries to develop non-school-hour programs that encourage career development, school achievement, life skills, career skills, and positive youth development for teenagers in resource-challenged areas. We heard about your program through the Tutor/Mentor Connection website, which was recommended to us as a valuable tool for designing mentoring programs. I'd like to arrange a visit to your site with one of my colleagues, if that's possible. A great time for us is the 19th or 20th of October. We would love to see the environment and talk to staff! - 10/09/00 0 Email from Nicole Rosa in Denver who is beginning to build an on-line math tutoring "HUB" with T/MC ideas. My last email to her was " I also suggest you go in another direction. What should a parent be considering in making a decision on choosing an on-line tutor? What fees should a parent expect? What guarantees or refunds are available? Is there any body of knowledge you can point to or create that would make visitors want to come to your site as a reference for on-line tutoring? The internet is the wild west in terms of commerce and tutoring is a very subjective area. Can you take a lead and help educate the consumer from your site? Can you link to organizations who also are trying to do this? She wrote: "I really like where you're going with this, Dan! The field of on-line tutoring is wide open with absolutely no guidelines. You're giving me all sorts of ideas. I could be the person to sort of pull all of this together. I will start working on your suggestions!

I would love to contribute, but I havemany academic responsibilities slated for the upcoming year. I am definitely interested, however.
- 10/11/00 0 Email conversation started with Craig Anthony Thomas, ExDir of the Kalamazoo Chapter of World Organization of Web Masters. Both meetings take place Tuesday at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. It is my impression from frequent visits to your site that Kalamazoo folks could go piggyback with your efforts in a viable parnership. I'll also check out your upcoming November conference as a in-service training session that our group leaders can attend. The information you share helps me make a compelling case for a partnership.

Recorded 38 activities in T/MC’s log.
Named as a key person in these events
- 01/02/01 0 Follow-up call to Tricia S. with Centro Comunitario Juan Diego. Initial contact made as part of outreach effort. This conversation we discussed some of Tricia's areas of concern which include needing more volunteers, getting parents more involved and having more program structure. We talked informally and some suggestions I made include having older kids serve as tutors for younger kids and having parent committee take on the responsibility of getting more parents involved and possibly organize workshops for parents that help them understand ways to get more involved in their children's educations. We will talk again in a few weeks, after Tricia has time to go through information I sent her on starting a program.
- 01/04/01 0 Contacted Starfish Learning Center as part of our outreach efforts. Starfish was not in our directory. We learned about the program through another outreach call to the Sunlight African Community Center. Starfish operates an after-school tutoring and mentoring in the Rogers Park area. It provides homework help and skill building activities, plus uses the arts and takes kids on trips to places like Florida as rewards for good grades. Starfish has a Christian focus and also teaches bible study to kids. The organization plans to start a cable show with its students.
- 01/05/01 0 Contacted Ron A. with the ACE mentoring program in the Fox Valley (IL) area. Learned about this program that exposes high school to careers in Architecture, Construction and Engineering (i.e. ACE), through a Chicago Tribune article. The program is in its first year and is going well. The program idea is modeled after a similar program in NYC.
- 01/09/01 0 Contacted Association House as part of our outreach efforts. Learned more about their after-school programs which consists of one for kids ages 6-12 and other for teens, ages 12-18.
- 01/10/01 0 Contacted Rockwell-Grant Youth Project as part of our outreach efforts. Rockwell-Grant is listed in our directory. Learned that they are looking at some changes to the program, primarily focusing its services more on youth as opposed to the entire family, as before. This will allow them to serve more youth. Also, because of violence in Rockwell Gardens, it makes outreach into the community difficult and dangerous. The program is primarily in-school and there's a need for day time mentors & tutors.
- 01/11/01 0 Contacted Onward Neighborhood House as part of our outreach efforts. Learned that they are collaborating with East Village and that 7-8 of their students to East Village for tutoring. Onward is also part of a collaboration with Erie and Association Houses and other agencies for Youth Options Unlimited. In addition, learned that Onward recived a grant from Kraft to start a career-related mentoring program. I provided some ideas of how to implement this. I also suggested to try to incorporate it into what they are already doing, as opposed to creating something new and separate. I also suggested they contact some of their current collaboration partners for ideas, including Erie Neighborhood House who had been offering a career mentoring program in the past, I believe. In addition, I sent some how to start a program information.
- 01/11/01 0 Contacted the Donnelly Chicago Youth Center about their CHESS program which is listed in our directory. Learned that the CHESS program is no longer operating because the kids who were in it graduated from high school (CHESS was like an I Have A Dream Program with a specific group of kids). CYC has limited peer mentoring and some tutoring. Wants to expand these services at some point. Needs more tutors, especially adult volunteers.
- 01/24/01 0 First Leadership Conference Committee meeting was held for the Spring 2001 conference. Also, the first ever online committee was held. There were 8 attendees to the live meeting and 4 attendees to the online meeting. The online meeting was held in the chat room of the leadership_conference egroup.
- 01/27/01 0 Cabrini Connections provided space in the Cornerstone building for New Concepts to hold a volunteer training session. About 10 New Concepts' volunteers attended the session.
- 01/31/01 0 Contacted Saint Pres Youth Center as part of our outreach efforts. Learned about their program, which is primarily an after-school program for grammar school kids. They have a need for volunteers plus more structure for their volunteer program. There are not a lot of businesses around the neighborhood, which makes volunteer recruitment challenging. I referred him to the Carol Robertson Center which is in the same zip code to ask how they recruit volunteers. I also sent info on volunteer recruitment and retainment.
- 02/01/01 0 Contacted Ann L. from Good News Partners - Reading Coaches as part of our outreach efforts. The program works with first grade students from Gale School. They assess all the students and work with the ones who need the most help, except those students who speak little English. They used a structured curriculum.
- 02/02/01 0 Contact the Chinese American Service League. Learned that their program is expected to start in mid-February 2001. I gave her our website address and told her about the conference, which she seemed interested in. She said she would callus back in the future once the program has been operating for a while and she has a better idea of how she could utilize our services.
- 02/02/01 0 Contacted Connie L. to see how her program was progressing. We met almost two years ago when they were first starting a program. Connie has attended several of our conferences. We just touched base. The program is in it's second year and its attendance has grown from about 15 kids to about 25. Volunteers increased to about 8-9. The challenge is keeping kids involved because they have many other committments.
- 02/02/01 0 Spoke with Claudia S. of Family Matters as part of our outreach efforts. Learned more about their program which includes tutoring at Gale School after school and an evening program at the Family Matters site. Learned that they need more minority tutors. Also learned that they have a tutor website that is used to communicate with each other.
- 02/07/01 0 We were contacted by Saul A. from the Chicago Youth Centers Lower North Center for help/information on starting a mentoring program. I sent her the "How To Start a Program" handout from the conference and the National Mentoring Partnership checklist. I also told her about the website and said she should call us back for more specific help.
- 02/08/01 0 Met with the Rev. Dr. Walter B. Johnson, Jr., Pastor of the Wayman African methodist Episcopal Church to discuss his after-school program which is part of the Alliance for Community Peace. Learned that Wayman Church along with other churches on the near north side, have formed the Near North Ministry Alliance, which in turn started the Alliance for Community Peace in 1997. Work of the ACP includes in-school and after-school tutoring and mentoring an enrichment activities.
- 02/08/01 0 Spoke with Leslie S. from the Jr. League Eckert Park tutoring program as part of our outreach efforts. Larned that the program meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings during the school year. They have youth work with Jr. League members as tutors. It may not be the same person each week. They also bring in guest speakers and have special projects. The group recently started a point program where youth can buy merchandise from the "store" monthly. The program has 3-4 Jr. Leaguers as coordinators.
- 02/09/01 0 Spoke with Philip J. from the Blackstar Project as part of our outreach efforts. Learned about the program, which according to Philip J., is the "largest classroom mentoring program" operating. Blackstar focuses on youth in grades 6-8 who attend either a public school, private school or Catholic school. The program "mentors" nine thousand youth in 70 school. Philip J. said that Blackstar uses a curriculum, but did not want to share the specifics. He did say that the curriculum reinforces academics and career counseling. The program also has 120 mentors.
- 02/12/01 0 We were contacted by the Independent Feature Project/Midwest because they are thinking about starting a mentoring program that matches film/video professionals with youth. I shared with them about IYP and also suggested that they serve as a resource for programs that already exist as opposed to starting something new. They seemed to like that idea because they didn't want to recreate what was already out there and they have a very small staff and know it would be challenging to support such a program. I also said that other organizations may appreciate them as a resource for potential mentors, setting up internships and other contacts they may have. I suggested they bring program leaders together and ask them what kind of support they would like. In addition, I sent them several contacts that they did not know about.
- 02/13/01 0 Attended the Prevent Violence! Chicago committee meeting for Dan. Discussion at the meeting included plans for a mentor training put on by Susan McGee at Big Brothers for faith-based groups. I sent them two contact names of people from two churches that contacted us for help. The committee also decided to put the public awareness campaign about mentoring on hold. The meeting last only about 35 minutes. In a related note, I forwarded Katherine K.'s name (she's with the Chicago Department of Public Health) to Rebekah C. at the Independent Features Project as a contact about youth video programs. Katherine is working with a group that has a cable show.
- 02/16/01 0 Met with Becky S. to provide consulting on starting a tutoring/mentoring program. Becky contacted me in response to an earlier call I placed to their agency as part of our outreach efforts. I sent her the presentation on starting a program and we discussed several concerns/issues she had. I encouraged her to start small and build the foundation. She agreed with that. I also told her about the Leadership Conference and the Volunteer Recruitment Campaign.
- 02/23/01 0 Met with Damien J. of the High Jump program at Latin School as part of our outreach efforts. Got a better understanding of the program, which targets motivated youths from disadvantaged communities. It is a 2 1/2 year program, with students starting the summer after 6th grade. The participants attend the program at Latin School and are prepared to enter college prep high schools. A lot of the focus is teaching the youth how to learn, what questions to ask and helping them feel comfortable in a college prep environment. About 80 kids are in the program. There was a mentoring piece run by Junior League. Damien J. wants to expand on this and create a more comprehensive mentoring program.
- 02/26/01 0 I contacted Norma L. with the Latino Organization of the Southwest as part of our outreach efforts. She currently organizes ESL classes for prents of children in the Headstart Midway program. Her organization works in collaboration with Headstart Midway and the Chicago Lawn Library. She also is now starting a tutoring program for grammar school children at the library. She is using teens as tutors. Whe wants to start a tutoring program for teens, too. The goal for the grammer school program is to enroll up to 15 kids, 5 per night for three nights. Space limitations at the library dictate this number.
- 08/02/00 0 Provided "consulting" to Traci S. from Christopher House on starting a mentoring program. I provided some basic questions to answer, such what age group do they want to serve and what is the purpose of the program, then discussed the questions in more detail.
- 08/17/00 0 Rebecca A. from the Jewish United Fund's TOV Literacy project e-mailed us on our website for more information on our organization. In response to this e-mail, I contacted her and shared information bout our conference and volunteer recruitment campaing. I also learned about their program, which is focused on literacy tutoring in schools.
- 08/21/00 0 Spoke with Jeannie B. from East Village Youth Program and learned that they launched a new outreach effort last year. East Village Youth Program is going into schools and conducting workshops to help better prepare youth to get into college. They decided to add the outreach effort as a way to reach more students without the cost of having to fully enroll them in their program (all students enrolled in East Village are guaranteed a college scholarship).
- 09/12/00 0 Provided "consulting" service to Adriene C. from the Westside Holistic Center on starting a tutoring/mentoring program. They planned to start an after school program that enhances academic skills and social skills beginning in October 2000.
- 09/12/00 0 Spoke with Sheila H. from Denver, CO who contacted us about the November conference. She had spoken to Dan previously. She shared how impressed she is with the T/MC and that she thinks we are a great model to use in other cities, such as Denver.
- 09/14/00 0 Represented the T/MC in the LAN 65 resource fair at Truman College
- 09/26/00 0 Provided "consulting" to Jessica H. from Project Explore. They currently work with youth in the summer to teach them about dinosaur exploration. They wanted to add an ongoing tutoring/mentoring component to help the youth year-round.
- 10/11/00 0 I contacted The Great Books Foundation for a raffle donation for the 14th T/MC Conference scheduled for November 9 & 10, 2000. The initial conversation for a donation led into a more in-depth conversation in which we shared information about our organizations. There is a lot of potential for t/m programs to partner with TGBF.
- 11/21/00 0 Vikki R. from the National Mentoring Center contacted us to learn more about our conferences, in particular, our conference scheduled for this April/May. They planned to host a regional conference in the Chicago area in April. I provided information about the format/topics of our conference and invited her organization to partner with us. She is going to discuss options with her staff, such as hosting it elsewhere or working with us. She said they could provide a workshop presenter for us at no charge. Possible someone to discuss board development.
- 12/06/00 0 Provided consulting services to T. Stanley from Christopher House. This is the second time we spoke on the telephone about the mentoring program she is developing. The first time (documented earlier) was general "How to Get Started". This conversation was specific to volunteer reporting on their activities/volunteer support and volunteer screening.
- 12/14/00 0 Contacted Sue T. with the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church Brain Booster program as part of my outreach efforts. She gave me a better understanding of the their program. They work with 30 kids (that's capacity) and have about 25 tutors. 20 of the tutors are high school students earning their community service hours. The program runs from 3:00-5:00 on Tuesdays. They spend 1/2 hour in groups working on basic math and reading skills, than 1 hour with their tutors. The adult tutors also serve as mentors to the high school students, so there is a need for more adult volunteers
- 12/15/00 0 Spoke with Becky N. from Park KIDS/Chase Park program as part of outreach efforts. Learned more about the PARK Kids programs. Each park determines their own programming. Chase offers several different recreational classes youth can choose including theater & arts, gymnastics and woodworking. Homework time is also a choice. Students work independently. The park use to offer tutoring, but the funding was provided by CPS who now uses that money to fund the Lighthouse programs at schools.
- 12/15/00 0 Spoke with Lillian E. from Presentation Church - A.S.A.P. t/m program as part of my outreach efforts. Learned more about their program which serves 67 youth M-F afterschool. Needs include more volunteers, computers and money for summer field trips.
- 12/18/00 0 Contacted Cetnro Communitario Juan Diego as part of our outreach effort. Learned about their program which includes tutoring for kids and teaching computers to kids. There are currently about 35 kid enrolled, and 6 more on the waiting list. There's a need for adult volunteers, especially those that can work with kids with special needs. We discussed some recruitment ideas and the importance of training as part of the retention plan.
- 12/18/00 0 Contacted STEP, Inc. Youth Service Program as part of our outreach efforts. Learned more about their program and their needs. One of their biggest needs is finding volunteers to teach their students computer graphic design. In general, they mainly utilize parent volunteers. The staff works with the students. They serve about 85 annually, and average about 25 youth a day.
- 12/18/00 0 Contacted the Arab American Action Network Youth Program as part of our Outreach efforts. Learned about their program, which currently is using high school students to tutor younger kids. Needs include trying to recruit adult/college students as tutors. The program manager, Hatem A., has tried recruiting with not a lot of success. Challenges could be the time of the program, which is 4:30. We discussed the value in using high school students, but the need exists to better train them and to educate the parents on the value of using high school students.
- 12/28/00 0 Contacted Sunlight African Community Center as part of our outreach work. Learned more about the program and some of their challenges. Two of the top challenges are need for more funds and need for volunteers. We talked about using the high school students as volunteers because they need community service hours. Lack of parent involvement is another challenge. The program's founder has done a lot of networking with local organizations, especially other organizations that target immigrants.
- 12/29/00 0 Linda B. from Emerald Avenue Church of God called for Dan Bassill on Friday. She wanted help on training mentors for a program she's starting at her church. I talked with her because Dan was not in. Through our conversation I learned that she first needed some guidance on how to structure her program, which is necessary before she could train volunteers. I sent her How To Get started information and told her to contact me again to after putting some ideas on paper. She also still wanted to talk with Dan. I left him a message.
- 12/29/00 0 Matt T. from JACS contacted us looking for Steve R. to get guidance on evaluation. Matt saw Steve's name in our newsletter as the evaluation contact. I referred Matt to this website and said he could contact Steve via e-mail. We began talking about JACS program and how they are modifying it from telephone contact with many (1,000s??) Job Corps graduates to providing more extensive support to fewer students in two states. We talked a little about structuring a one-on-one relationship with a volunteer mentor and the need for JACS staff to support the mentors. I referred him to Tim H. from Mercy Home for an idea of how many mentors one staff person could support. Matt asked if we could talk in the future about training and supporting mentors. I, of course, said "Yes"!

- 03/14/05 0 Received email from Dr. Charanjeet Singh who leads the GIS NKCA project at UCLA. In response to my email he has offered to help build a similar GIS portal for T/MC. Steve Roussos, of www.akouo.org sent this referral a few weeks ago.
- 06/12/01 0 Steve Roussos forward an email from Cynthia White of ThinkDetroit. It said, "Thanks for the information and I have forwarded it to my Executive Director who seems interested and believes it is timely. So, we will carefully review this and provide you with feedback soon."
- 08/01/02 0 Added 15 Cabrini Connections IT volunteers to the Marketing/Database eGroup, which will serve as a temporary meeting place for a workgroup focused on building an Internet IT platform for Cabrini Connections. These volunteers represent a variety of IT backgrounds and companies. Together they have the talent to meet our goals, as well as the connections in industry to get the dollars/software and hardware needed to do the work.
- 08/09/01 0 A new link was posted on the Tutor/Mentor Exchange announcing the details for the Volunteer Recruitment Campaign. http://www.tutormentorexchange.net/tmcrecruitmentcampaign.htm
- 09/07/01 0 T/MC database was placed on Tutor/Mentor Exchange web site today thanks to the work of Ken Novak, Steve Roussos and Julie Hamilton.
- 09/24/01 0 Steve Roussos taught Dan Bassill to use Front Page to edit the Tutor/Mentor Exchange web site. With that lesson Dan has made the site more current and has added a links page. This is critical because the master Tutor/Mentor Connection site remains out of service. Knowing Front Page enables the T/MC to be current in its news to the public.

Jim Cory T/MC volunteer, GIS Analyst, GIS Volunteer with T/MC12
Recorded 1 activities in T/MC’s log.
Named as a key person in these events
- 01/06/02 0 A set of six maps that show poverty areas in Chicago are now on the GIS web site. These maps show schools on the November State Board of Education warning list, and tutor/mentor programs. We’ve broken the maps down by the time of day the service is available and the age group served. Our maps show many more programs available during the 3-5 time frame when most workplace volunteers are not able to participate in comprehensive tutor/mentor programs. Our maps show fewer programs for high school youth, which is a contributing factor to the high dropout rate of teens. I emailed reporters, columist, editorial people, etc. at the Tribune, SunTimes and WGN Radio to encourage them to use these maps in 2002 stories.
- 01/21/03 0 Jim Cory repots that he has installed a free site counter service on the map web site. Since the January T/MC email newsletter references this site, the counter will help us know if people are visiting it and using our information.
- 05/02/04 0 On May 1 I emailed members of the GIS group and requested a map showing the location of the Chicago school where Girl Gangs were terrorizing students and faculty. This was featured on the front page of the Chicago Sun Times. On May 2, Jim Cory, from Madison, Wisconsin, sent me the map. On May 5th this map was available in the Program Locator section of www.tutormentorexchange.net and I was sending copies to media for follow up stories.
- 06/13/01 0 Met with Jim Cory, GIS analysit from Madison, WI. Shared more info on T/MC overall goals and use of GIS to achieve those goals. Jim has volunteered personal time to help T/MC ramp up GIS capacity.
- 07/27/01 0 Jim Cory reports "that Census 2000 data is available now for Illinois" and he has "since downloaded it, but it is in very raw format. This means that it may take a little while to massage it into what we need. At any rate we can go ahead with plans to update the mentor maps with all new data."
- 08/08/01 0 Jim Cory posted the first GIS map template that he has created at http://members.home.net/jcory17 .

We've borrowed our name and many of our working concepts from the T/MC, and we encourage other organizations and communities to consider a similar strategy. Visit the www.tutormentorconnection.org site for maps and charts illustrating this vision.
- 11/08/02 0 Ken King sent email saying he has signed up 16 Gear Up people for the Nov. 2002 Tutor/Mentor Leadership Conference.
- 12/04/02 0 Talked via phone with Ken King, ED of New Concepts Tutor/Mentor Connection, about collaborating to build a Tutor/Mentor Learning Network, funded like traditional "Think Tanks". Lorraine Bogan SAFE, The SAFE HAVEN10
Named as a key person in these events
- 08/14/01 0 Pam Rwankole of PCI reports, "WBBM-TV was out at the church to interview Lorraine Bogan this morning. The segment is scheduled to air tonight at 5 p.m." Lorraine runs a tutor/mentor program on the South Side of Chicago. T/MC recognized that she needed help and offered its pro bono PR team's aid.
- 08/23/01 0 Harry Porterfield of Channel 2 did a "People you should know" feature on Lorraine Bogan, who leads a program in Roseland that is losing their space. This was arranged by PCI, working for the T/MC.
- 09/10/02 0 Met with Lorraine Bogan today. She is leader of The SAFE Haven Tutoring Program in Chicago. She's also a minister. She agreed to try to develop "sermon kits" that ministers can use to preach about how congregations can get involved with tutor/mentor strategies. The kit would have a sample sermon, an insert for the church bulletin, the bulletin board and the church web site, and a feedback form for programs to self identify. She would use these to go to churches to deliver sermons. We would sell them on the T/MC store and split the proceeds.

Renee Tucker Associated Colleges of Illinois (ACI), Associated Colleges of Illinois8
Named as a key person in these events
- 01/04/02 0 Renee Tucker of ACI sent this letter to 20 ACI colleges in Illinois and Wisconsin: ACI has been involved with the Tutor/Mentor Conference (T/MC) for several years now, and I have been involved individually since the 2nd conference as a presenter and planning committee member. For the upcoming conference, a call for presenters has been issued, which you will find in this mailing. Please look it over and consider who on your campus may be interested in being a presenter in May. T/MC started as a program of Cabrini Connections tutoring/mentoring program 8 years ago as a grassroots effort to pool knowledge and resources among Chicago’s non-profit, child-serving organizations. The conference occurs twice per year and now has a typical attendance of 300. While the majority of the participants come from the Chicago area, we have also drawn folks from Australia, Washington D.C., New Jersey, Oregon, California, and many other far-off places. T/MC charges minimal fees because the intent is still to help those non-profit organizations who operate on a shoe-string budget. For this reason, T/MC cannot offer honorariums to presenters, and the planning team consists of volunteers interested in keeping this conference going and growing. The information I have enclosed was printed from the conference web site, www.tutormentorconference.bigstep.com, if you or someone on your campus would like to read more about the conference. Please also feel free to pass on my name, number, 312-263-2391 x25, and email address, renee.tucker@acifund.org, as I am happy to talk about the event and the opportunity to present a workshop.
- 02/06/02 0 T/MC conference committee met today. - 07/05/02 0 Tom Klaus, Legacy Resource Group, sent an email and reported, " I was just at Holiday Home Camp in Wisconsin with Carl Hobbs (whom I met at your Fall conference) to do a training with his staff."
- 11/29/01 0 Tom Klaus, of the Legacy Group, distributed the following message to his email newsletter network: ARE YOU DOING TUTORING & MENTORING? CHECK THIS OUT! Recently I had the opportunity to speak at a conference in Chicago for a group that, frankly, I knew very little about. I had agreed to speak at the conference because the person who recommended it to me was someone whose judgment I trust and advice I value. As it turns out it was one of those really serendipitous experiences. The conference was the semi-annual Tutor/Mentor Leadership Conference. The driving force behind the conference is Dr. Daniel Bassill, who is President of Cabrini Connections and the Tutor/Mentor Connection. Dr. Bassil is a passionate leader who firmly believes in the power of one human life to affect another for good. While much of Dan's work is focused on Chicago, he has also helped facilitate the creation of a nationwide network of organizations and individuals who are involved in tutoring and mentoring. If you or your organization are involved in tutoring and mentoring, Dan Bassill is someone you need to know and the May Tutor/Mentor Leadership Conference is an event you need to get on your calendar. Even now Dan and Aimee Sherman, the Conference Coordinator, are working on that event. In fact, you can submit to present. For more information, contact Aimee at aimeeconfplan@hotmail.com. Also, take a few minutes and visit the website of the Tutor/Mentor Connection at www.tutormentorexchange.net. You'll be glad you did!

- 05/30/02 0 Beth Brandon, Public Awareness Director of Chicago Rush Football called to set up a meeting. We'll discuss ways to build public awareness for tutoring/mentoring, and the Rush Football team, via a reading program that the team already supports in public schools.
- 09/18/02 0 Met with Beth Brandon and Kurt Kroemer of the Chicago Rush Arena Football Game. The Rush has launched a Charity Ticket Sales program that helps tutor/mentor programs (and other charities) raise money. This was an idea we suggested when we met in May. Any tutor/mentor program that sells tickets to the 2003 season can ern $8 to $16 per ticket sold. In addition, the first or second home game of the 2003 season will be designated Tutor/Mentor Connection Game. We'll encourage programs to sell for this game. Beth and Kurt will work with T/MC to help tutor/mentor programs learn about this program. They will also recruit a coach/player to speak at the November Conference.
- 11/06/02 0 Presented information on Chicago Rush Arena Football partnership with T/MC to three programs. Announced it via new page on web site. Any tutor/mentor program in Chicago can sell tickets to 2003 Rush home games and get 1/2 the face price of the ticket as a donation. In addition, the Feb. 2 game will be designated "Tutor/Mentor Game" and will feature the Tutor/Mentor Connection and all programs that sell tickets. This game will be regionally telacast on NBC

- 01/16/01 0 Sara Caldwell launched a message in the Art Festival eCircle, starting planning for a 2001 art festival.
- 02/13/03 0 While we do not have a major event to document, we are making progress in a major area of public awareness. Following are some examples: Sara Caldwell, a founder of Cabrini Connections, has submitted a proposal for a one-hour documentary, titled Touched by a Mentor. This will feature a Mentor Theme song written by Sammie Lee, of California. Dr. Edward Gordon, a CC advisory council member, is researching the feasability of writing a book that profiles tutoring/mentoring Alison Neumer, of the ChicagoTribune RedEye section is considering doing a series of profiles. In addition, Community Media Workshop profiles the T/MC in its NEWSTIPS section.
- 03/07/02 0 The West Coast Alumni Newsletter of Columbia College Chicago has the following article in the Vol. 1, #9 issue (2002): MAKE A DIFFERENCE Not many people will make an impact on a child's life the way a tutor/mentor can. Thanks to thousands of volunteers, a growing number of underprivileged students are getting help to succeed in school and go on to find rewarding careers. Chicago's Cabrini Connections is a leader in this movement. For many years Columbia College students and faculty have helped this organization mobilize volunteers, business partners, and philanthropists to support tutor/mentor programs in every poverty area of Chicago. Through the Internet it shares this strategy with the world.
- 03/28/05 0 Sara Caldwell, a founder of Cabrini Connections and the Tutor/Mentor Connection, sent a copy of her new book, "Jumpstart Your Awesome Film Production Company". In the forward she wrote, "I also want to acknowledge Daniel Bassill, President and CEO of the Cabrini Connections tutor/mentor program in Chicago, who opened my eyes in so many important ways. Thanks to Dan, I have enjoyed one of the most important friendships of my life with my former tutee, the talented and remarkable Isaiah Brooms. As a veteran of mentoring programs and a man who knows no bounds when it comes to selfless giving, Dan is a true role model and hero, no matter what your profession." Sara is donating 15% of royalties from this book to Cabrini Connections.
- 03/29/01 0 Received email from Shannah Compton of Hometown Cinema. She wrote, "We have offices in both Indy and Los Angeles. I spend most of the time in Los Angeles developing relationships with HOllywood professionals and securing sponsors etc. I would love to talk with you about how we can go beyond kids making films and start school-to-career mentoring programs. The Indianapolis community seems very open to such a situation and I have to believe that other cities would as well.
- 04/03/03 0 Sara Caldwell, a CC founder, came to Chicago from LA to film interviews with CC students, volunteers and alumni for a demo tape she is creating for the "Touched by a Mentor" documentary (see www.amphionpro.com).

She already has a number of international artists lined up to display art. She wrote, "Teh art festival website is up at: www.angelfire.com/art/cabrini The Information page will include the address, reception times, and general news and info. The "Art for Sale" page will include about 10-15 pieces of art for sale and will link to my gallery order form for purchases."
- 10/10/01 0 Sara Calwell posted "news" on her www.amphionpro.com web site about "Touched by a Tutor", a 10-part series that profiles the inspiring and engaging relationships that take place between tutors and students at the Cabrini Connections tutoring program in Chicago. She sent this notice via email to her friends.
- 11/17/02 0 Sammie Lee, a singer/song writer from the SanFrancisco area, emailed an intro to T/MC. He's written a song on mentoring that will be sung during National Mentoring Month. He found our web site and was introducing himself to me. We exchanged email and I forwarded his intro to Sara Caldwell, a CC volunteer who is a writer/producer. She and Sammie connected and now are collaborating on a 1 hour mentoring documentary that Sara and T/MC have been trying to create for several years.

Recorded 3 activities in T/MC’s log.
- 03/07/02 0 Julie sent T/MC maps showing MBF Bank locations. Karen Perlman, vp of Marketing at the bank sent T/MC their logo. T/MC will create brochure templates that the Bank will print and handout at 31 branch locations.
- 08/07/01 0 I completed my first map of Mentoring programs in the Chicago area and posted it on the Web. The map was very similar to maps that Julie Hamilton has done for Cabrini Connections.
- 09/07/01 0 T/MC database was placed on Tutor/Mentor Exchange web site today thanks to the work of Ken Novak, Steve Roussos and Julie Hamilton.
- 09/16/02 0 Board of Directors met and committed to sending 2 letters each per month to potential members/donors and to bringing one person per quarter to a breakfast, lunch, dinner or event to learn about the organization.
- 09/23/04 0 Julie Hamilton, Scot Hamilton and Shon Doseck, a GIS Analyst with Pangaea Information Technologies, Ltd, in Chicago, met to disucss T/MC GIS strategies. Shon has volunteered to take a lead role in the project and has recruited his company to host the T/MC map gallery and provide other in-kind support needed for the project.
- 12/05/01 0 Monica Johnson, Managing Consultant, press, Ganey Associates, Inc., has agreed to take charge of the 1994 to 2001 T/MC surveys. She and other volunteers will build a data-entry module and then enter all T/MC surveys since 1994, then create report formats for the data to be available to any user. Goal of first set of reports being complete is late May 2002.
- 12/09/02 0 I sent out 20 fundraising letters to family and friends. I hope to raise at least 1,000 through this group.

- 01/27/01 0 Received email from Mason Scholl introducing me to people from the faith network, such as Eccumenical Child Care Network. He had sent an email to a person who works with NIC local church after-school programs. He wrote, "I am sending you is one from Dan Bassill, Ex. Director, Cabrini Connection, a wonderful, creative after-school tutoring and mentoring program in Chicago's Cabrini neighborhood near St. Matthews UMC. I urge you to look at his web site. He would like to connect with our NIC effort at after-school programs and has much information to exchange with us. I would like at the appropriate time to introduce him to the leadership of the NIC after-school movement. One way to know more about his organization is to check out his website listed in his message."
- 02/16/01 0 Mason Scholl, a T/MC friend, forwarded email he sent to Rick George of ChildServ in Chicago. His email said, "I suggest that Ed Vega and you contact Dan Bassill at Cabrini Connection to look at ways you could be helpful to each other. . Before your contact Dan, look at his web site: . You will find announcements and descriptions of great training events for staff and volunteers. There are also suggestions on ways After School programs can develop collaborative relationships with each other in recruiting volunteer tutors and mentors for all the After School programs in the city.
- 04/21/04 0 Received email from Mason Scholl that said: "I'm attaching a PDF file of a newsletter article describing 9 Northern IL United Methodist churches that received grants for their afterschool programs. Yesterday, I called the Rev. Oscar Carrasco, Director of Connectional Ministries, for the Northern IL Conference (NIC) and the Rev. Harry Nicol, Executive Dir., Northern IL Conference United Methodist Foundation suggesting that they meet with you to discuss what kind of collaboration might take place between TutorMentorConnection and the NIC efforts toward expanding afterschool program services to the communities being served by these local congregations
- 04/23/01 0 Mason Scholl, United Voices for Children, posted an email message into a variety of faith networks. The lead paragraph reads, "With more and more NIC congregations involved in afterschool/mentoring programs, I want to alert you to an excellent 2-day training workshop for staff and volunteers scheduled for May 17/18 in Chicago. This workshop is sponsored by one of the best nationally recognized afterschool/mentoring programs in the country, Cabrini Connection, located on the near north side of Chicago. Its President/CEO, Dan Bassill, is recognized as one of the national experts in this kind of program." He encouraged everyone to attend the May conference.
- 09/14/00 0 The Executive Directory of the Ecumenical Child Care Network (ECCN) sent me an email offering to a) co sponsor conferences and do workshops; b) web link; c) share T/MC in ECCN networks; d) cross promote in newsletters, and e) continue discussion of how our two organizations can work together.
- 12/31/00 0 Receive this email from Mason Scholl: I saw the front page article in today's Trib about Cabrini Connections. I don't know whether words of congratulations or consolation or both are appropriate. What is the short-term and long-term implications of Wards exit on your work? I also want to let you know that the one of the priorities of the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church as it relates to children is after-school programs. A significant proposal has been sent to the denominations Board of Global Ministries requesting funds for this purpose. This has been pushed by the Aurora District Superintendent, Rev. Deborah Fisher. Right after New Years, I plan to call her and find out what she knows about your work and suggest that she contact you. This may be another way some networking can begin.

- 06/23/04 0 Received call from singer/songwriter Alice Peacock, www.alicepeacock.com. She is organizing a RockforReading Concert to be held in Chicago in late August, and the beneficiaries are a) Chicago Public Schools, b) Chicago Public Library, c) New City YMCA, and d) Tutor/Mentor Connection! She told me that the T/MC was recommended for inclusion in this group by Arne Duncan, CEO of Chicago Public Schools
- 07/19/04 0 Rock for Reading web site (www.rockforreading.com) was launched today. The T/MC is one of four organizations (the others are Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Public Library, and YMCA) that will share attention and revenue from a rock concert being held in Chicago on August 28th, 2004.
- 08/28/04 0 First Annual Rock for Reading Music Festival held in Chicago. Organized by music artist Alice Peacock, and sponsored by The Chicago Sun Times, this event was designed to raise visibility for reading programs and raise money for four charities: The Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Public Library, New City YMCA and Tutor/Mentor Connection. The T/MC used the event to raise visibility and help recruit volunteers for tutor/mentor programs. Five organizations participated in recruiting volunteers: East Village Youth Program, Cabrini-Green Tutoring Program, CYCLE, Project Education Plus and Cabrini Connections. Unfortunately, it rained all day and was cold. Few people attended and the event was ended at 7pm instead of 11pm. While this means that few dollars were raised, the event led to many networking connections that the T/MC and others can use in the future.

TechSoup.org has asked me to host an online "event" on the topic of education and the digital divide, focusing on online learning and collaboration tools/spaces. I have a lot of experience with online learning in academic settings, which do bridge the divide for a lot of people who would otherwise not be able to continue their education. I also have a lot of experience with online collaboration. But currently I do not have work going that uses these tools in community-based ways. So I wondered whether you might be interested to join me as a co-host for this proposed event? Between the two of us we cover a lot of ground. Mahesh N. Alur Volunteer2
Named as a key person in these events
- 09/05/01 0 Received following email from Mahesh N. Alur, PhD Candidate, Northwestern University Medical School. He contacted T/MC on 9/1 and offered to raise money for Cabrini Connections through his running in the Chicago Marathon. The email was sent to his friends: Dear Family, Friends, and Colleagues, As some of you know, I am running in my first marathon on October 7, 2001, in Chicago! I thought that this race would be a great opportunity to raise some money for a cause that has become increasingly important to me. During the past year, I tutored an eighth grade student who attended St. Joseph's and lives in the Cabrini Green Housing Project. I found it to be a very rewarding experience, and I believe that a small fundraising campaign would help tremendously a program, the community, and most significantly, the students who deserve the educational opportunities that most of us were fortunate to receive. Cabrini Connections is very similar to the program in which I participated. Not only does it provide tutoring by bringing together working professionals and students from educationally disadvantaged environments, it also attempts to coordinate tutoring across Chicago and the country. It does this by using the internet coupled with marketing and advertising approaches in order to expand outreach and knowledge on issues of poverty and education. The idea is that each tutoring program can learn from each others' experiences in how to reach students and how to attract volunteers. In fact, Cabrini Connections was the organization that helped me to find the tutoring opportunity at St. Joseph's at this time last year. I know that most of you on this e-mail list are of meager means (financially-speaking), but even small donations will be extremely helpful. For those of you who would like to donate a larger amount, all donations to Cabrini Connections are tax deductible. Please do not feel obligated to donate, but if you would like to support me -- and more importantly, these students -- your donation would be met by my undying gratitude. Additionally, please pass this message along to people who I may have missed or to others who would be interested in donating. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me.
- 10/25/01 0 Mahesh Alur gave Cabrini Connections donations totalling $1,196 which were collected from 38 people who had pledged funds to Cabrini Connections when Mahesh ran in the 2001 Chicago Marathon. Mahesh chose Cabrini Connections because in 2000 he was connected as a mentor to another tutor/mentor program and has found it very rewarding. The T/MC referred him to that program.

- Undated On April 29, 2004, I phoned Dan Cantrell, Congressman Danny Davis's assistant for economic development and grants, and invited him to attend part of the May17-18 Leadership Conference with me to give him, and through him, the congressman a fuller understanding of the mission and work of T/MC and CC. I called Cantrell at the suggestion of the congressman's principal assistant, Gwen Burnett with whom I've been communicating since early November 2003 in an effort to talk to the congressman to inquire about possible additional (or special Federal) financial assistance to help keep our programs operating effectively, given the general decrease in our financial resources.
