We talked informally and some suggestions I made include having older kids serve as tutors for younger kids and having parent committee take on the responsibility of getting more parents involved and possibly organize workshops for parents that help them understand ways to get more involved in their children's educations. We hope to do a program about the Digital Divide for our librarian colleagues in Atlanta in June 2002. "Brothers; Those who know Dan know that he works tirelessly and without ceasing to help inner city kids find their way out of poverty and towards active, productive, educated lives. Dan Bassill embodies "Human Service" at its best. Dan's done this for a LONG time, often with little recognition. An award like this, while not the extra $$ that Dan needs to make his programs GO, likely goes some distance to help him keep up the fight. Suggestion: take a look in your pocket RIGHT NOW and send Dan a check for whatever you can spare.. even if it's "not much"... EVERYTHING helps. — IWU Acacia Fraternity, IWU President's office

  • 2001-09-05 Received following email from Mahesh N. Alur, PhD Candidate, Northwestern University Medical School. He contacted T/MC on 9/1 and offered to raise money for Cabrini Connections through his running in the Chicago Marathon. The email was sent to his friends: Dear Family, Friends, and Colleagues, As some of you know, I am running in my first marathon on October 7, 2001, in Chicago! I thought that this race would be a great opportunity to raise some money for a cause that has become increasingly important to me. During the past year, I tutored an eighth grade student who attended St. Joseph's and lives in the Cabrini Green Housing Project. I found it to be a very rewarding experience, and I believe that a small fundraising campaign would help tremendously a program, the community, and most significantly, the students who deserve the educational opportunities that most of us were fortunate to receive. Cabrini Connections is very similar to the program in which I participated. Not only does it provide tutoring by bringing together working professionals and students from educationally disadvantaged environments, it also attempts to coordinate tutoring across Chicago and the country. It does this by using the internet coupled with marketing and advertising approaches in order to expand outreach and knowledge on issues of poverty and education. The idea is that each tutoring program can learn from each others' experiences in how to reach students and how to attract volunteers. In fact, Cabrini Connections was the organization that helped me to find the tutoring opportunity at St. Joseph's at this time last year. I know that most of you on this e-mail list are of meager means (financially-speaking), but even small donations will be extremely helpful. For those of you who would like to donate a larger amount, all donations to Cabrini Connections are tax deductible. Please do not feel obligated to donate, but if you would like to support me -- and more importantly, these students -- your donation would be met by my undying gratitude. Additionally, please pass this message along to people who I may have missed or to others who would be interested in donating. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me.

Recently I had the opportunity to speak at a conference in Chicago for a group that, frankly, I knew very little about. • 2001-12-18 Received email from Ron Melka, Youth in Crisis, Berwyn, Il. "We have just received a Federal Title V Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Grant through the Illinois Department of Human Services, to start a big brother/sister type program which we call a youth advocate. We want the program period to start February 1, 2002. It is for police referred youth from the city of Berwyn. We need program materials, evaluation tools and anything else that may be helpful. Thank you for your assistance." Responded with email and invitation to use web site and our 800 W. Huron library. — Youth in Crisis
  • 2001-12-18 Don Samuelson wrote: "I'll ask April to send you a copy of our ICTF proposal for a statewide Network and central support system. We did talk about you yesterday at our collaborator meeting when John Chmela discussed the interim web site we were going to put up, and the potential of the permanent web site that will be created as part of the overall effort. We talked about how we might best collaborate with your efforts. Think John Chmela of the Jim Mullen Foundation and you should talk."
  • 2001-12-19 Contacted by Lisa Trischitta, Community Mobilizer for Mentoring with the Delaware Mentoring Council. T/MC sent email response which Lisa followed with this message: "Thank you so much for all of your help. This information is wonderful. I really appreciate it." — Delaware Mentoring Council.
