  • 2000-09-14 Was cc'd on an email from Don Samuelson, whom I've been networking with for more than a year. Don was writing to the following people: alicia-clifford@uchicago.edu; dwalters13@mailcity.com (Danielle Walters), vdorsey@thecha.org; Darkwa@uic.edu, bakerd@iit.edu; Kalven@aol.com; DBarnes@thecha.org (Barnes,Diana); LHutchin@thecha.org (Hutchinson,Linda); PSM97@aol.com; dshannon@midway.uchicago.edu;Paula1077@aol.com; eadsd@student.northpark.edu Don wrote: We should really be developing some "tutoring" relationship in Stateway between Martin Luther King Drive and the kids at Stateway. Similar to the various tutoring programs that have been in operation at Cabrini. And between students at IIT and the kids at Stateway. Will very much be helped if it can be assisted by the Internet. Nelda? Elliott Donnelley? Crispus Attucks? Raymond? DeLaSalle? Phillips? Lots of resources to be connected. What is the most effective way of raising awareness, and aggregating and informing demand? Perhaps there could be a delegation from the Stateway community that could attend the Tutor Mentor conference. Might be a very good idea. Perhaps Phillip Jackson could be helpful in this area. Sounds like something in which he would have a real interest.

Are you developing a mentoring project for the kids? Are you creating online content for folks in the community?

I'm interested in learning more about your mapping and other services. I mainly work with organizations on database development projects and many times I need to refer clients for those services. Also, our business development director was telling me about some business partners that he is currently talking to. I think your organization can fit into those projects. • 2000-09-16 Received minutes of Aug 15 Youth Development Implementation Team from the PreventViolence!Chicago task force. In these one member was quoted as "concerned that there is not much concrete to report" at planned October Summit. I met with this group in Aug 99 and outlined the T/MC plan. This resulted in more signatures for the Campaign Manifesto, Dan Devine sponsoring the Nov 99 conf, and workshops on Juvenile Justice being a the Nov 99 and May 2000 conference. It did not result in this group embracing the T/MC strategy as there strategy. Thus, today I emailed Katherine Klimisch who is the liason to Sister Sheila Lyne, Head of PreventViolence!Chicago, and encouraged her to nudge the connection with the T/MC along.

She stated that she would be talking with you soon to let you know that Peoria's Promise is no longer meeting and the United Way's volunteer Center would be taking over.I'm not sure what all this means yet. I also talked and invited Billie Block to meet with us as well and she stated that she is interested as well as several other youth orientated groups in Peoria. I also like what you have said about momentum. I feel that Peoria has been staying still, but not going anywhere. i would like to change that. • 2000-10-09 Email from Nicole Rosa in Denver who is beginning to build an on-line math tutoring "HUB" with T/MC ideas. My last email to her was " I also suggest you go in another direction. What should a parent be considering in making a decision on choosing an on-line tutor? What fees should a parent expect? What guarantees or refunds are available? Is there any body of knowledge you can point to or create that would make visitors want to come to your site as a reference for on-line tutoring? The internet is the wild west in terms of commerce and tutoring is a very subjective area. Can you take a lead and help educate the consumer from your site? Can you link to organizations who also are trying to do this? She wrote: "I really like where you're going with this, Dan! The field of on-line tutoring is wide open with absolutely no guidelines. We talked a little about structuring a one-on-one relationship with a volunteer mentor and the need for JACS staff to support the mentors.
