Partners

T/MC did not run tutoring programs itself; it worked through partners who could bring volunteers, money and attention to programs across the city. These are the partnerships with their own folders in the files. Select a document to read it.

Lawyers’ Lend-A-Hand to Youth and the Chicago Bar Foundation

1993–2008

The Chicago Bar Association’s Lend-A-Hand program and the Chicago Bar Foundation were T/MC’s longest partners. Together they organized Tutor/Mentor Week from 1994, with proclamations from Mayor Daley, and Lend-A-Hand made grants to tutoring and mentoring programs that T/MC mapped. A 1995 agreement formalized the partnership; T/MC received a share of the money raised, and in 2003 it wrote strategies for Lend-A-Hand’s future after the Foundation withdrew its support.

About 100 files: agreements, grant lists, proclamations, letters, CBA Record and Law Bulletin stories.

MENTOR and the Illinois Mentoring Partnership

1996–2016

The national mentoring organization MENTOR visited T/MC in 1996, and in August 1999 the two signed a memorandum of understanding. From 2011 Dan worked with the Illinois Mentoring Partnership on its leadership meetings, a 2011 survey of mentoring programs, the 2014 State of Mentoring in Illinois report and a 2016 research symposium.

Chicago Public Schools

1995–2004

Cabrini Connections and T/MC were among the vendors in CPS’s 1996 “10,000 Tutors” program. T/MC asked the schools to support its work in 1997, received support from 2002 to 2004, and Dan wrote to schools chief Arne Duncan in 2001.

Serve Illinois Commission

1997–2017

Dan was an Illinois delegate to the 1997 Presidents’ Summit for America’s Future and was appointed to the Serve Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service in 2001. His notes from commission meetings run from 2001 to 2009, with Campus Compact and volunteer-center work through 2017.

About 20 files of meeting notes and newsletters.

Thrive Chicago

2013–2017

Thrive Chicago brought city agencies, funders and nonprofits together around youth outcomes. Dan took part in its mentoring work and change-network meetings and kept detailed handwritten notes, which still need transcribing.

4 files, including two volumes of notes.

Universities, Illinois Wesleyan above all

1990–2015

Dan’s alma mater, Illinois Wesleyan University, analyzed T/MC’s first program survey in 1994, joined its advisory council and sent student volunteers. The files hold correspondence with more than a dozen other universities about interns, research and service learning.

About 200 files in the University and IWU folders.

Business, faith and health partners

1993–2008

T/MC asked companies, congregations and hospitals to adopt tutoring and mentoring in the neighborhoods they serve. The files include a Junior Achievement partnership, a hospital strategy, work with faith communities and letters to more than 50 business leaders.

About 120 files in the business, faith and hospital folders.

Public officials

1994–2005

Mayor Daley proclaimed Tutor/Mentor Week and the volunteer recruitment campaigns, and spoke at the 1997 Leadership Conference. State Senator Barack Obama spoke at the 1999 conference, and Dan wrote to him afterwards about mentoring in the non-school hours. In 2005 Dan testified at Representative Jim Watson’s task force hearings.

About 40 files in the Mayor Daley and political contacts folders.
