  • 2001-09-05 Received following email from Mahesh N. Alur, PhD Candidate, Northwestern University Medical School. He contacted T/MC on 9/1 and offered to raise money for Cabrini Connections through his running in the Chicago Marathon. The email was sent to his friends: Dear Family, Friends, and Colleagues, As some of you know, I am running in my first marathon on October 7, 2001, in Chicago! I thought that this race would be a great opportunity to raise some money for a cause that has become increasingly important to me. During the past year, I tutored an eighth grade student who attended St. Joseph's and lives in the Cabrini Green Housing Project. I found it to be a very rewarding experience, and I believe that a small fundraising campaign would help tremendously a program, the community, and most significantly, the students who deserve the educational opportunities that most of us were fortunate to receive. Cabrini Connections is very similar to the program in which I participated. Not only does it provide tutoring by bringing together working professionals and students from educationally disadvantaged environments, it also attempts to coordinate tutoring across Chicago and the country. It does this by using the internet coupled with marketing and advertising approaches in order to expand outreach and knowledge on issues of poverty and education. The idea is that each tutoring program can learn from each others' experiences in how to reach students and how to attract volunteers. In fact, Cabrini Connections was the organization that helped me to find the tutoring opportunity at St. Joseph's at this time last year. I know that most of you on this e-mail list are of meager means (financially-speaking), but even small donations will be extremely helpful. For those of you who would like to donate a larger amount, all donations to Cabrini Connections are tax deductible. Please do not feel obligated to donate, but if you would like to support me -- and more importantly, these students -- your donation would be met by my undying gratitude. Additionally, please pass this message along to people who I may have missed or to others who would be interested in donating. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me.

  • 2002-01-04 Renee Tucker of ACI sent this letter to 20 ACI colleges in Illinois and Wisconsin: ACI has been involved with the Tutor/Mentor Conference (T/MC) for several years now, and I have been involved individually since the 2nd conference as a presenter and planning committee member. For the upcoming conference, a call for presenters has been issued, which you will find in this mailing. Please look it over and consider who on your campus may be interested in being a presenter in May. T/MC started as a program of Cabrini Connections tutoring/mentoring program 8 years ago as a grassroots effort to pool knowledge and resources among Chicago’s non-profit, child-serving organizations. The conference occurs twice per year and now has a typical attendance of 300. While the majority of the participants come from the Chicago area, we have also drawn folks from Australia, Washington D.C., New Jersey, Oregon, California, and many other far-off places. T/MC charges minimal fees because the intent is still to help those non-profit organizations who operate on a shoe-string budget. For this reason, T/MC cannot offer honorariums to presenters, and the planning team consists of volunteers interested in keeping this conference going and growing. The information I have enclosed was printed from the conference web site, www.tutormentorconference.bigstep.com, if you or someone on your campus would like to read more about the conference. Please also feel free to pass on my name, number, 312-263-2391 x25, and email address, renee.tucker@acifund.org, as I am happy to talk about the event and the opportunity to present a workshop.

  • 2002-01-17 Margaret Grieco, Visiting Fellow, Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge, UK, posted this message to Global Knowledge Development list: The internet can be used to empower those previously by-passed in decision making processes. The poverty mapping of Chicago (T/MC) is an excellent example. Volunteers in disadvantaged communities can map their experience and regularly update and display it and grow conscious of the overall framework which has historically restricted them." This was part of a longer message. I emailed a follow u p intro and offer to work together to develop GIS resourses more groups could use.

Mr. Dickinson was referred to T/MC by Calvin Morris of the Community Renewal Society, who receives the T/MC REPORT
  • 2002-02-27 Talked with Dr. Ana Marie Schue who leads a strategic planning class at DePaul. The T/MC will be a case history for a spring quarter class. The goal is that this group develop a strategic plan that we can present to universities to get them to partner with the T/MC on collecting information and getting people (their other students, faculty and alumni) to use it as volunteers and partners of tutor/mentor programs anywhere in the Chicago region. • 2002-03-07 The West Coast Alumni Newsletter of Columbia College Chicago has the following article in the Vol. 1, #9 issue (2002): MAKE A DIFFERENCE Not many people will make an impact on a child's life the way a tutor/mentor can. Thanks to thousands of volunteers, a growing number of underprivileged students are getting help to succeed in school and go on to find rewarding careers. • 2004-10-11 Received following email from Ian Jipp, who I first met in 1994 or 1995 when he was with Loyola University in Chicago. He has been on the T/MC newsletter and email list since then. " I have relocated to Los Angeles and am working the Director of Annual Giving at Harvard-Westlake School. I participated in an all-day college counseling program sponsored by the Mentoring Partnership, a collaborative effort working with tutoring programs here in LA. My boss, Ed Hu, was a key organizerof the event. Megan Chernin was another organizer, she is a volunteer committed to raising money for the Mentoring Partnership. I have passed along information about the Chicago Tutor/Mentor Leadership conference. I do not know if they will attend the conference or simply contact you to network and gain more information about the TMC and Cabrinin Connections, but the seed has been planted. " Megan, and her husband Peter, are a couple who could provide a great deal of support to mentoring efforts. And she has made this a personal prioity. Please let me know if she contacts you

  • 2005-02-25 Received following message from Clair Keim, from the UK, who has a Churchill Travel Fellowship to visit the USA in 2005 to learn about School based mentoring. This is in response to a message I sent encouraging her organization to host a portion of the May and Nov eConference. " Fantastic! Thanks Daniel. Despite working in a Technology College, IT isn't my strong point, but we do have internet conferencing facilities in the school and i've forwarded your email to various staff who should be able to help with the technical aspects. I've also forwarded it to the 'Learning Mentor Co-ordinator' for the whole of Birmingham. I'm sure she'll be keen to get involved and is regularly in touch with mentors in all of the 100 secondary schools (ages 11-16/18) in the city - Birmingham is apparently the biggest local government education authority in Europe, including a wide range of diverse communities, so there should be plenty of scope for learning from each other. I'll let you know when i hear back from other staff and have more idea about the possibilities at our end. I'll go back to your website for more detailed information about the internet conferences and look forward to making plans.
