What should a parent be considering in making a decision on choosing an on-line tutor? What fees should a parent expect? What guarantees or refunds are available? Is there any body of knowledge you can point to or create that would make visitors want to come to your site as a reference for on-line tutoring? The internet is the wild west in terms of commerce and tutoring is a very subjective area. Can you take a lead and help educate the consumer from your site? Can you link to organizations who also are trying to do this? She wrote: "I really like where you're going with this, Dan! The field of on-line tutoring is wide open with absolutely no guidelines. You're giving me all sorts of ideas. I could be the person to sort of pull all of this together. I will start working on your suggestions!

Recently I had the opportunity to speak at a conference in Chicago for a group that, frankly, I knew very little about. I had agreed to speak at the conference because the person who recommended it to me was someone whose judgment I trust and advice I value. As it turns out it was one of those really serendipitous experiences. The conference was the semi-annual Tutor/Mentor Leadership Conference. The driving force behind the conference is Dr. Daniel Bassill, who is President of Cabrini Connections and the Tutor/Mentor Connection. Dr. Bassil is a passionate leader who firmly believes in the power of one human life to affect another for good. While much of Dan's work is focused on Chicago, he has also helped facilitate the creation of a nationwide network of organizations and individuals who are involved in tutoring and mentoring. If you or your organization are involved in tutoring and mentoring, Dan Bassill is someone you need to know and the May Tutor/Mentor Leadership Conference is an event you need to get on your calendar. Even now Dan and Aimee Sherman, the Conference Coordinator, are working on that event. In fact, you can submit to present. For more information, contact Aimee at aimeeconfplan@hotmail.com. Also, take a few minutes and visit the website of the Tutor/Mentor Connection at www.tutormentorexchange.net. You'll be glad you did!

You can visit our web site at www.iaaec.org for more information.I would very much like to talk with you in detail about possible collaborations. Let me know when you will be available for a telecon. • 2002-01-04 Renee Tucker of ACI sent this letter to 20 ACI colleges in Illinois and Wisconsin: ACI has been involved with the Tutor/Mentor Conference (T/MC) for several years now, and I have been involved individually since the 2nd conference as a presenter and planning committee member. For the upcoming conference, a call for presenters has been issued, which you will find in this mailing. Please look it over and consider who on your campus may be interested in being a presenter in May. T/MC started as a program of Cabrini Connections tutoring/mentoring program 8 years ago as a grassroots effort to pool knowledge and resources among Chicago’s non-profit, child-serving organizations. The conference occurs twice per year and now has a typical attendance of 300. While the majority of the participants come from the Chicago area, we have also drawn folks from Australia, Washington D.C., New Jersey, Oregon, California, and many other far-off places. T/MC charges minimal fees because the intent is still to help those non-profit organizations who operate on a shoe-string budget. For this reason, T/MC cannot offer honorariums to presenters, and the planning team consists of volunteers interested in keeping this conference going and growing. The information I have enclosed was printed from the conference web site, www.tutormentorconference.bigstep.com, if you or someone on your campus would like to read more about the conference. Please also feel free to pass on my name, number, 312-263-2391 x25, and email address, renee.tucker@acifund.org, as I am happy to talk about the event and the opportunity to present a workshop.
  • 2002-01-06 A set of six maps that show poverty areas in Chicago are now on the GIS web site. These maps show schools on the November State Board of Education warning list, and tutor/mentor programs. We’ve broken the maps down by the time of day the service is available and the age group served. Our maps show many more programs available during the 3-5 time frame when most workplace volunteers are not able to participate in comprehensive tutor/mentor programs. Our maps show fewer programs for high school youth, which is a contributing factor to the high dropout rate of teens. I emailed reporters, columist, editorial people, etc. at the Tribune, SunTimes and WGN Radio to encourage them to use these maps in 2002 stories.
  • 2002-01-15 Dan Bassill attended Job Corps briefing hosted by Joint Center for Poverty Research. This is new Chicago resource that I was not aware of. Also at the meeting were an aid to Senator Durban of Illinois, , James Jones of Child Serve, Jan DeCoursey of Chapin Hall, and a Kids' Connection volunteer who works for the Chicago Job Development Department.

I am a teacher in an inner-city school in Connecticut and the director of a new national environmental education and technology program. "Raptors in the City" has the special goal of connecting urban kids with nature via technology." I sent information back on the conference, web site and other ways we could help people learn about this program.

PowerSuasion develops scripts which actors perform as training for corporate people. When I saw this I felt it would be very effective for training volunteers because of the way actors can improvise performances based on the questions volunteers raise. Mr. Smejda has been a tutor for innercity youth and understood well what the potential for his services would be. The challenge will be to find funding to develop a pilot and present this as a training option for programs (during T/MC conferences)

There is nearly $65,000 available for 2002 grants to one-on-one tutor/mentor programs (for grants, Demetrrio Award and Searns Family Foundation Match). While a schedule of review was discussed, the bigger issue was the announcement that the Strategic Planning Committee of the Chicago Bar Foundation had decided that Lend A Hand was not a core strategy and that the fund raising (and grant giving) would not be continued in the present format in 2003. This led to the beginning of what will be an on-going conversation among LAH council members intended to keep the program alive and growing. Many commitments were made, including one from Mike Demetrio of Corboy & Dimetrio, to continue to provide resource for the program to continue.

This is in response to a message I sent encouraging her organization to host a portion of the May and Nov eConference. " Fantastic! Thanks Daniel. Despite working in a Technology College, IT isn't my strong point, but we do have internet conferencing facilities in the school and i've forwarded your email to various staff who should be able to help with the technical aspects. I've also forwarded it to the 'Learning Mentor Co-ordinator' for the whole of Birmingham. I'm sure she'll be keen to get involved and is regularly in touch with mentors in all of the 100 secondary schools (ages 11-16/18) in the city - Birmingham is apparently the biggest local government education authority in Europe, including a wide range of diverse communities, so there should be plenty of scope for learning from each other. I'll let you know when i hear back from other staff and have more idea about the possibilities at our end. I'll go back to your website for more detailed information about the internet conferences and look forward to making plans.

  • 2005-03-11 Received email today from Janet Salmons, who I've worked with previously in conferneces such as Wired.org. She wrote, "When I read your newsletters I always try to think of some way we could do something together again, and this time I have an idea! TechSoup.org has asked me to host an online "event" on the topic of education and the digital divide, focusing on online learning and collaboration tools/spaces. I have a lot of experience with online learning in academic settings, which do bridge the divide for a lot of people who would otherwise not be able to continue their education. I also have a lot of experience with online collaboration. But currently I do not have work going that uses these tools in community-based ways. So I wondered whether you might be interested to join me as a co-host for this proposed event? Between the two of us we cover a lot of ground. If you are interested we can refine these broad topics and decide how to approach the event. " I agreed and we're aiming to host a week-line event during the week of April 18.

Thank you for encouraging me to move forward with this concept. It looks like we're making progress. Should you have any other guidance to share (once your hands aren't so full), I'll be ready to listen. This was a comment from Traci Stanley, Director of Youth Development Services at Christopher House: "Thanks to you as well Dan. I hired a new tutoring coordinator this summer to manage Christopher House's tutoring program and she found the conference to be extremely helpful. She and I have done some "debriefing" since the conference and I can definitely say that the training, resources, and networking that she got out of the conference will effectively increase our capacity to serve our children and families. Thanks again!" The attendance was the lowest 2-day attendance since 1994. Those who attended benefited, as the comment above indicates.
