  • 2000-09-22 Received following email from Kurstin Finch Gnehm, Project Manager, Public Libraries as Partners in Youth Development, Urban Libraries Council: I'm the Project Manager for a Wallace-Reader's Digest Funds grant called "Public Libraries as Partners in Youth Development." The grant has been given to nine libraries, plus the Urban Libraries Council to provide T.A. The grant's goal is to help libraries to develop non-school-hour programs that encourage career development, school achievement, life skills, career skills, and positive youth development for teenagers in resource-challenged areas. We heard about your program through the Tutor/Mentor Connection website, which was recommended to us as a valuable tool for designing mentoring programs. I'd like to arrange a visit to your site with one of my colleagues, if that's possible. A great time for us is the 19th or 20th of October. We would love to see the environment and talk to staff! If you could contact me about this, I'd really appreciate it. My contact information is below, and email works great for me.

  • 2000-10-03 The tutoring and mentoring efforts for Peoria, Illinois were at a stand still. Our local Peoria's Promise group had disbanded in their recruiting efforts. We conducted a meeting to our Peoria Prevention Council, this is a group made up of local after-school preventionists, and had Dan Bassill talk about his work and efforts for the tutor mentor connections. This was a motivating point for all of us.The Chair of our Peoria's Promise was rejuvinized and we are forming a new focus group to re-evaluate what had taken place in the past and how we can move forward. I believe that the Peoria's Promise group will add new memebrs that will bring in the motivation, resources, and energy needed to make things better and move forward.

They spend 1/2 hour in groups working on basic math and reading skills, than 1 hour with their tutors. The adult tutors also serve as mentors to the high school students, so there is a need for more adult volunteers

The program manager, Hatem A., has tried recruiting with not a lot of success. Challenges could be the time of the program, which is 4:30. • 2000-12-31 Receive this email from Mason Scholl: I saw the front page article in today's Trib about Cabrini Connections. I don't know whether words of congratulations or consolation or both are appropriate. What is the short-term and long-term implications of Wards exit on your work? I also want to let you know that the one of the priorities of the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church as it relates to children is after-school programs. A significant proposal has been sent to the denominations Board of Global Ministries requesting funds for this purpose. This has been pushed by the Aurora District Superintendent, Rev. Deborah Fisher. Right after New Years, I plan to call her and find out what she knows about your work and suggest that she contact you. This may be another way some networking can begin.

Learned that they are looking at some changes to the program, primarily focusing its services more on youth as opposed to the entire family, as before. This will allow them to serve more youth. Also, because of violence in Rockwell Gardens, it makes outreach into the community difficult and dangerous. The program is primarily in-school and there's a need for day time mentors & tutors.

A lot of the focus is teaching the youth how to learn, what questions to ask and helping them feel comfortable in a college prep environment. About 80 kids are in the program. There was a mentoring piece run by Junior League. Damien J. wants to expand on this and create a more comprehensive mentoring program.

The goal for the grammer school program is to enroll up to 15 kids, 5 per night for three nights. Space limitations at the library dictate this number.
  • 2001-03-29 Received email from Shannah Compton of Hometown Cinema. She wrote, "We have offices in both Indy and Los Angeles. I spend most of the time in Los Angeles developing relationships with HOllywood professionals and securing sponsors etc. I would love to talk with you about how we can go beyond kids making films and start school-to-career mentoring programs. • 2001-09-05 Received following email from Mahesh N. Alur, PhD Candidate, Northwestern University Medical School. He contacted T/MC on 9/1 and offered to raise money for Cabrini Connections through his running in the Chicago Marathon. The email was sent to his friends: Dear Family, Friends, and Colleagues, As some of you know, I am running in my first marathon on October 7, 2001, in Chicago! I thought that this race would be a great opportunity to raise some money for a cause that has become increasingly important to me. During the past year, I tutored an eighth grade student who attended St. Joseph's and lives in the Cabrini Green Housing Project. I found it to be a very rewarding experience, and I believe that a small fundraising campaign would help tremendously a program, the community, and most significantly, the students who deserve the educational opportunities that most of us were fortunate to receive. Cabrini Connections is very similar to the program in which I participated. Not only does it provide tutoring by bringing together working professionals and students from educationally disadvantaged environments, it also attempts to coordinate tutoring across Chicago and the country. It does this by using the internet coupled with marketing and advertising approaches in order to expand outreach and knowledge on issues of poverty and education. The idea is that each tutoring program can learn from each others' experiences in how to reach students and how to attract volunteers. In fact, Cabrini Connections was the organization that helped me to find the tutoring opportunity at St. Joseph's at this time last year. I know that most of you on this e-mail list are of meager means (financially-speaking), but even small donations will be extremely helpful. For those of you who would like to donate a larger amount, all donations to Cabrini Connections are tax deductible. Please do not feel obligated to donate, but if you would like to support me -- and more importantly, these students -- your donation would be met by my undying gratitude. Additionally, please pass this message along to people who I may have missed or to others who would be interested in donating. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me.

  • 2002-01-06 A set of six maps that show poverty areas in Chicago are now on the GIS web site. These maps show schools on the November State Board of Education warning list, and tutor/mentor programs. We’ve broken the maps down by the time of day the service is available and the age group served. Our maps show many more programs available during the 3-5 time frame when most workplace volunteers are not able to participate in comprehensive tutor/mentor programs. Our maps show fewer programs for high school youth, which is a contributing factor to the high dropout rate of teens. I emailed reporters, columist, editorial people, etc. at the Tribune, SunTimes and WGN Radio to encourage them to use these maps in 2002 stories.

  • 2002-02-11 Peter Dickinson, a tutor at Yale Elementary School in Englewood, called to ask for information on non-school tutor/mentor programs around the school. • 2002-03-07 The West Coast Alumni Newsletter of Columbia College Chicago has the following article in the Vol. 1, #9 issue (2002): MAKE A DIFFERENCE Not many people will make an impact on a child's life the way a tutor/mentor can. Thanks to thousands of volunteers, a growing number of underprivileged students are getting help to succeed in school and go on to find rewarding careers. Chicago's Cabrini Connections is a leader in this movement. For many years Columbia College students and faculty have helped this organization mobilize volunteers, business partners, and philanthropists to support tutor/mentor programs in every poverty area of Chicago. A different charitable organization will be highlighted each month; some requesting short-term commitments, some with long-term commitments and some in need of a financial donation or simply a donation of time. Our goal is to provide multiple opportunities to give back to the community in a way that is truly meaningful. We will highlight a variety of organizations to pique diverse interests, such as shelters for battered women and children, groups that assist with the winterization of homes for the elderly, animal shelters, and tutoring/mentoring local students, which happens to be the first community opportunity: Cabrini Connections "Back to School" Tutor/Mentor Program Over the next four weeks, Cabrini Connections and other tutor/mentor programs around the city will be recruiting volunteers for our various programs. We strongly urge you to click on the link below to view the numerous programs throughout the city. You can make a difference. http://www.tutormentorexchange.net/Partner/CC/ChiPrograms/ChicagoPrograms.asp. Should you choose to volunteer as a tutor or mentor, send me an e-mail stating your commitment so we can recognize your efforts in our Chicago Briefing. Community service will not only make you feel good about yourself and expand your contact network, it will make a lasting difference in someone's life. If this opportunity is not right for you, just wait and see what next month holds....
  • 2004-08-28 First Annual Rock for Reading Music Festival held in Chicago. Organized by music artist Alice Peacock, and sponsored by The Chicago Sun Times, this event was designed to raise visibility for reading programs and raise money for four charities: The Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Public Library, New City YMCA and Tutor/Mentor Connection. The T/MC used the event to raise visibility and help recruit volunteers for tutor/mentor programs. Five organizations participated in recruiting volunteers: East Village Youth Program, Cabrini-Green Tutoring Program, CYCLE, Project Education Plus and Cabrini Connections. Unfortunately, it rained all day and was cold. Few people attended and the event was ended at 7pm instead of 11pm. While this means that few dollars were raised, the event led to many networking connections that the T/MC and others can use in the future.
  • 2004-10-11 Received following email from Ian Jipp, who I first met in 1994 or 1995 when he was with Loyola University in Chicago. He has been on the T/MC newsletter and email list since then. My boss, Ed Hu, was a key organizerof the event. Megan Chernin was another organizer, she is a volunteer committed to raising money for the Mentoring Partnership. I have passed along information about the Chicago Tutor/Mentor Leadership conference. I do not know if they will attend the conference or simply contact you to network and gain more information about the TMC and Cabrinin Connections, but the seed has been planted. " Megan, and her husband Peter, are a couple who could provide a great deal of support to mentoring efforts. And she has made this a personal prioity. Please let me know if she contacts you
  • 2004-10-27 Received email from Jurandir in SaoPaolo Brazil that reads: "Hi, I have talking to a dicrector and principals at our Christian school in sao Paulo about a possibility to have a mentor program for a region here in Sao Paulo. • 2005-01-07 The Children & Family Justice Center of the Northwestern University School of Law will host the May 2005 Tutor/Mentor Leadership and Networking Conference on May 12 and 13. • 2005-02-25 Received following message from Clair Keim, from the UK, who has a Churchill Travel Fellowship to visit the USA in 2005 to learn about School based mentoring. This is in response to a message I sent encouraging her organization to host a portion of the May and Nov eConference. " Fantastic! Thanks Daniel. Despite working in a Technology College, IT isn't my strong point, but we do have internet conferencing facilities in the school and i've forwarded your email to various staff who should be able to help with the technical aspects. I've also forwarded it to the 'Learning Mentor Co-ordinator' for the whole of Birmingham. I'm sure she'll be keen to get involved and is regularly in touch with mentors in all of the 100 secondary schools (ages 11-16/18) in the city - Birmingham is apparently the biggest local government education authority in Europe, including a wide range of diverse communities, so there should be plenty of scope for learning from each other. I'll let you know when i hear back from other staff and have more idea about the possibilities at our end. I'll go back to your website for more detailed information about the internet conferences and look forward to making plans.
  • 2005-03-08 Following an email introduction, I met at T/MC office in Chicago with Sarah Pearson, American Youth Policy Forum,1836 Jefferson Place, NW, Washington, DC 20036. Shared info about T/MC and AYP and discussed a new AYPF study titled: Restoring the Balance between Academics and Civic Engagement in Public Schools, a guide to producing students who are both academically proficient and civically engaged. This report highlights core values of the T/MC and while it focuses on schools as the place where kids learn these values, it shares a T/MC goal of engaging parents, CBOs and the business community as responsible partners. Sarah will send copies for the May Confernece and is considering ways to participate in T/MC forums, such as the eConference.
  • 2005-04-29 Attended forum titled "Youth on the Streets: Lost in the Wilderness", hosted by Alternative Schools Network. During forum Phil Jackson of Black Star Project gave me the April-May 2005 Issue of Proud Parent Journey, which he distributes to 30,000 people. The Journal included a full page of tutor/mentor program contact information and a referral to the T/MC web site.

  • 2005-11-17 A 24th Tutor/Mentor Leadership and Networking Conference was held at St. Joseph's School in Chicago. About 90 people attendced. This was a comment from Traci Stanley, Director of Youth Development Services at Christopher House: "Thanks to you as well Dan. I hired a new tutoring coordinator this summer to manage Christopher House's tutoring program and she found the conference to be extremely helpful. She and I have done some "debriefing" since the conference and I can definitely say that the training, resources, and networking that she got out of the conference will effectively increase our capacity to serve our children and families. Thanks again!" The attendance was the lowest 2-day attendance since 1994. Those who attended benefited, as the comment above indicates. Event though attendance was low, holding the conference enabled us to create more Oct/Nov. awareness of tutoring/mentoring through the email and on-line marketing done to promote the conference.
  • 2005-11-30 In the past two weeks my follow ups to the conference have included email to people a universities, such as DePaul University, to people in churches and faith based organizations, and to volunteers who attend business grad schools such as Northwestern, University of Chicago, Oxford, etc.

  • 2006-09-14 Received this email today: Good morning Mr. Bassill, my name is Rosemary Collins, Program Director for Inwood North Community Outreach Program in Houston, TX. I am writing to you for assistance. We will be providing reading mentoring to the children who attend our after school program utilizing Time Warner's Learn To Read workbooks with Time for Kids Magazines. I also know that it is critical for me to train our volunteers before they begin mentoring the children. I understand from Ana (T/MC staff) that you have a handbook for volunteer training. It is possible for me to receive a copy of that manual? And any suggestions you may have. Thank you so much for your time and consideration. Our website address is www.incopcdc.org <http://www.incopcdc.org> "

I called Cantrell at the suggestion of the congressman's principal assistant, Gwen Burnett with whom I've been communicating since early November 2003 in an effort to talk to the congressman to inquire about possible additional (or special Federal) financial assistance to help keep our programs operating effectively, given the general decrease in our financial resources.
