Dan Bassill embodies "Human Service" at its best. Dan's done this for a LONG time, often with little recognition. An award like this, while not the extra $$ that Dan needs to make his programs GO, likely goes some distance to help him keep up the fight. - 2001-09-05 Received following email from Mahesh N. Alur, PhD Candidate, Northwestern University Medical School. He contacted T/MC on 9/1 and offered to raise money for Cabrini Connections through his running in the Chicago Marathon. The email was sent to his friends: Dear Family, Friends, and Colleagues, As some of you know, I am running in my first marathon on October 7, 2001, in Chicago! I thought that this race would be a great opportunity to raise some money for a cause that has become increasingly important to me. During the past year, I tutored an eighth grade student who attended St. Joseph's and lives in the Cabrini Green Housing Project. I found it to be a very rewarding experience, and I believe that a small fundraising campaign would help tremendously a program, the community, and most significantly, the students who deserve the educational opportunities that most of us were fortunate to receive. Cabrini Connections is very similar to the program in which I participated. Not only does it provide tutoring by bringing together working professionals and students from educationally disadvantaged environments, it also attempts to coordinate tutoring across Chicago and the country. It does this by using the internet coupled with marketing and advertising approaches in order to expand outreach and knowledge on issues of poverty and education. The idea is that each tutoring program can learn from each others' experiences in how to reach students and how to attract volunteers. In fact, Cabrini Connections was the organization that helped me to find the tutoring opportunity at St. Joseph's at this time last year. I know that most of you on this e-mail list are of meager means (financially-speaking), but even small donations will be extremely helpful. For those of you who would like to donate a larger amount, all donations to Cabrini Connections are tax deductible. Please do not feel obligated to donate, but if you would like to support me -- and more importantly, these students -- your donation would be met by my undying gratitude. Additionally, please pass this message along to people who I may have missed or to others who would be interested in donating. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me.

Both consultants agreed to offer their services and promote not only their seminar but the conference as well. Facilitators will receive 1/2 of monies generated for their seminar.
- Undated Myself and Steve Roussos and Paul Collins have put together a report and graphs indicating the evaluation results of the Spring 2001 conference. Myself and Steve Roussos are working together to re-do the tutormentorbigstep website to be a one stop site where prospective sponsors can gain not only information about becoming a sponsor of the conferences, but important statistical information on the impact of these conferences on actual programs.
- Undated Email exchange with Allen Whitehead, Director of Partner Services at Philanthropic Research, Inc., which is the host for Guidestar and Network for Good. While Allen offered no promise of immediate collaboration with the T/MC, he said, "Your file will stay in my 'current' notebook because I think some of these ideas will come back to us later when we might be in position to realistically consider them."
- Undated Launched a conversation with Sharon Caldwell of the Chicago Metropolitan YMCA about collaborating to operate tutor/mentor programs in area YMCAs, with funding coming from the Federal Mentoring Grant. Sharon agreed to include the T/MC as a consultant and training resource in the grant request she is developing for local YMCAs.
- Undated Recruited volunteers at the Annual Bonneville Radio Group's Volunteer Recruitment Fairs at Woodfield Shopping Center, located in the Northwest Suburbs. More than 150 people picked up handouts. 17 signed the volunteer interest sheet and/or provided busienss cards for follow up. Several radio station people stopped by for conversations that focused on goals/opportunities.
- Undated I have been involved in the North Shore Senior Center in various ways in the past and felt it might be a fertile source of effective volunteers, particularly for business-oriented functions. After making contact with the volunteer coordinator, I learned that Dan Bassill has an old friend and former business colleague who is very active at the center. This friend of Dan's offered us the opportunity to make a brief pitch to recruit vounteers at the start of one of the Center's weekly programs.
- Undated T/MC met with Mayor Ed Mulvaney of Rock Falls, Il. and presented an invitation for Mayors, or their spouses, to be leaders of the T/MC call to action, in their own communities. Mr. Mulvaney is also a Big Brother/Big Sister volunteer and presented a workshop at the Nov. 03 conference. He is also the chair of an association of Northern Illinois Mayors and agreed to present this invitation to them at a March 18th meeting. In addition, he will lead a workshop at the May 17 and 18 conference intended to draw Mayors to the conference and this strategy.
- Undated news
- Undated Talked for about 40 minutes with Ken Kominski of eLearningSpace.org about developing a partnership in which T/MC would received funding from grants developed by eLs. In return, we'd introduce eLS to the tutor/mentor world.
- Undated Received email from the Lend A Hand Program at the Chicago Bar Association telling that they now have their official 501(c)(3) tax exempt status, which means they can solicit charitble donations directly from donors, rather than through the original sponsor of the Lend A Hand, the Chicago Bar Foundation
- Undated At a City Hall Ceremony, Chicago's Mayor Richard Daley handed out $45,000 in Lend A Hand Program Grants to 17 different chicago area volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs. Lawyers from the Chicago Bar Association and several major law firms attended. The Thomas A. Demetrio Award ($8,000), which recognizes an outstanding tutor/mentor program, went to the Midtown Education Foundation. The Much Shelist Founder's Award ($7,000), which recognizes the efforts of emerging programs (5 years or less), went to Inspired Youth, led by Beth Palmer. Children from Inspired Youth, Hermosa Community Organization and Sunlight African Community Center sang and told of how mentors made a difference in their lives.
- Undated T/MC created small ads for the volunteer recruitment campaign with a goal that these would be used in a variety of media to draw vistors to the T/MC web site locations where they learn to be volunteers. EXTRA NEWS, which serves Latino Chicago agreed to not only print the ad, but to launch a campaign to enlist other advertisers to pay to have the ads run weekly. The ad format will be the same, with the logo of the company paying for the ad being shown in each different ad.
