I'd ask you, but I can't afford to fly you down to Atlanta!

"Brothers; Those who know Dan know that he works tirelessly and without ceasing to help inner city kids find their way out of poverty and towards active, productive, educated lives. Dan Bassill embodies "Human Service" at its best. Dan's done this for a LONG time, often with little recognition. An award like this, while not the extra $$ that Dan needs to make his programs GO, likely goes some distance to help him keep up the fight. Suggestion: take a look in your pocket RIGHT NOW and send Dan a check for whatever you can spare.. even if it's "not much"... EVERYTHING helps.

- 2001-09-05 Received following email from Mahesh N. Alur, PhD Candidate, Northwestern University Medical School. He contacted T/MC on 9/1 and offered to raise money for Cabrini Connections through his running in the Chicago Marathon. The email was sent to his friends: Dear Family, Friends, and Colleagues, As some of you know, I am running in my first marathon on October 7, 2001, in Chicago! I thought that this race would be a great opportunity to raise some money for a cause that has become increasingly important to me. During the past year, I tutored an eighth grade student who attended St. Joseph's and lives in the Cabrini Green Housing Project. I found it to be a very rewarding experience, and I believe that a small fundraising campaign would help tremendously a program, the community, and most significantly, the students who deserve the educational opportunities that most of us were fortunate to receive. Cabrini Connections is very similar to the program in which I participated. Not only does it provide tutoring by bringing together working professionals and students from educationally disadvantaged environments, it also attempts to coordinate tutoring across Chicago and the country. It does this by using the internet coupled with marketing and advertising approaches in order to expand outreach and knowledge on issues of poverty and education. The idea is that each tutoring program can learn from each others' experiences in how to reach students and how to attract volunteers. In fact, Cabrini Connections was the organization that helped me to find the tutoring opportunity at St. Joseph's at this time last year. I know that most of you on this e-mail list are of meager means (financially-speaking), but even small donations will be extremely helpful. For those of you who would like to donate a larger amount, all donations to Cabrini Connections are tax deductible. Please do not feel obligated to donate, but if you would like to support me -- and more importantly, these students -- your donation would be met by my undying gratitude. Additionally, please pass this message along to people who I may have missed or to others who would be interested in donating. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me.

Recently I had the opportunity to speak at a conference in Chicago for a group that, frankly, I knew very little about. I had agreed to speak at the conference because the person who recommended it to me was someone whose judgment I trust and advice I value. As it turns out it was one of those really serendipitous experiences. The conference was the semi-annual Tutor/Mentor Leadership Conference. The driving force behind the conference is Dr. Daniel Bassill, who is President of Cabrini Connections and the Tutor/Mentor Connection. Dr. Bassil is a passionate leader who firmly believes in the power of one human life to affect another for good. While much of Dan's work is focused on Chicago, he has also helped facilitate the creation of a nationwide network of organizations and individuals who are involved in tutoring and mentoring. If you or your organization are involved in tutoring and mentoring, Dan Bassill is someone you need to know and the May Tutor/Mentor Leadership Conference is an event you need to get on your calendar. Even now Dan and Aimee Sherman, the Conference Coordinator, are working on that event. In fact, you can submit to present. For more information, contact Aimee at aimeeconfplan@hotmail.com. The conference occurs twice per year and now has a typical attendance of 300. While the majority of the participants come from the Chicago area, we have also drawn folks from Australia, Washington D.C., New Jersey, Oregon, California, and many other far-off places. T/MC charges minimal fees because the intent is still to help those non-profit organizations who operate on a shoe-string budget. For this reason, T/MC cannot offer honorariums to presenters, and the planning team consists of volunteers interested in keeping this conference going and growing. The information I have enclosed was printed from the conference web site, www.tutormentorconference.bigstep.com, if you or someone on your campus would like to read more about the conference. Please also feel free to pass on my name, number, 312-263-2391 x25, and email address, renee.tucker@acifund.org, as I am happy to talk about the event and the opportunity to present a workshop.
- 2002-01-06 A set of six maps that show poverty areas in Chicago are now on the GIS web site. These maps show schools on the November State Board of Education warning list, and tutor/mentor programs. We’ve broken the maps down by the time of day the service is available and the age group served. Our maps show many more programs available during the 3-5 time frame when most workplace volunteers are not able to participate in comprehensive tutor/mentor programs. Our maps show fewer programs for high school youth, which is a contributing factor to the high dropout rate of teens. I emailed reporters, columist, editorial people, etc. at the Tribune, SunTimes and WGN Radio to encourage them to use these maps in 2002 stories.

T/MC worked with BBBS and the committee and is linked from the Chicago web sites that promote the event.

Volunteers in disadvantaged communities can map their experience and regularly update and display it and grow conscious of the overall framework which has historically restricted them." Because it is under my skin, so to speak, I bring its reference to many of my daily experiences. So, reading the newspaper becomes a quest for using that format to spread the word. The T/MC web site is awesome. Have you approached Jim Coates or anyone else in the Technology section of the Tribune about running an article on it? Seems to me that it is pretty special in the type and number of links and ideas it contains. I read Dear Abby every day just to see how the world beyond my experience gets on. Often there are letters from heads of organizations talking about their "month". It is a syndicated column and appears all over the world. A letter from you abut the campaign, its wide-reaching applicability, and a listing of the web site(s) might bring all kinds of results. Thanks for all you do for all of us. Good luck in the campaign. Mary " I asked Mary to send this endorsement to the Tribune herself. Moring

I have attached an overview of what our mission and goals are. We have officially become a partner with Mentor Michigan, which is our state's mentoring agency. TechSoup.org has asked me to host an online "event" on the topic of education and the digital divide, focusing on online learning and collaboration tools/spaces. I have a lot of experience with online learning in academic settings, which do bridge the divide for a lot of people who would otherwise not be able to continue their education. I also have a lot of experience with online collaboration. But currently I do not have work going that uses these tools in community-based ways. So I wondered whether you might be interested to join me as a co-host for this proposed event? Between the two of us we cover a lot of ground. If you are interested we can refine these broad topics and decide how to approach the event. " I agreed and we're aiming to host a week-line event during the week of April 18.

- Undated T/MC created small ads for the volunteer recruitment campaign with a goal that these would be used in a variety of media to draw vistors to the T/MC web site locations where they learn to be volunteers. EXTRA NEWS, which serves Latino Chicago agreed to not only print the ad, but to launch a campaign to enlist other advertisers to pay to have the ads run weekly. The ad format will be the same, with the logo of the company paying for the ad being shown in each different ad.
