Items are matched by the words they use, so a few may mention the subject only in passing; the most relevant come first.

Don was writing to the following people: alicia-clifford@uchicago.edu; dwalters13@mailcity.com (Danielle Walters), vdorsey@thecha.org; Darkwa@uic.edu, bakerd@iit.edu; Kalven@aol.com; DBarnes@thecha.org (Barnes,Diana); LHutchin@thecha.org (Hutchinson,Linda); PSM97@aol.com; dshannon@midway.uchicago.edu;Paula1077@aol.com; eadsd@student.northpark.edu Don wrote: We should really be developing some "tutoring" relationship in Stateway between Martin Luther King Drive and the kids at Stateway. Similar to the various tutoring programs that have been in operation at Cabrini. And between students at IIT and the kids at Stateway. Will very much be helped if it can be assisted by the Internet. Nelda? Elliott Donnelley? Crispus Attucks? Raymond? DeLaSalle? Phillips? Lots of resources to be connected. What is the most effective way of raising awareness, and aggregating and informing demand? Perhaps there could be a delegation from the Stateway community that could attend the Tutor Mentor conference. Might be a very good idea. Perhaps Phillip Jackson could be helpful in this area. Sounds like something in which he would have a real interest.

What should a parent be considering in making a decision on choosing an on-line tutor? What fees should a parent expect? What guarantees or refunds are available? Is there any body of knowledge you can point to or create that would make visitors want to come to your site as a reference for on-line tutoring? The internet is the wild west in terms of commerce and tutoring is a very subjective area. Can you take a lead and help educate the consumer from your site? Can you link to organizations who also are trying to do this? She wrote: "I really like where you're going with this, Dan! The field of on-line tutoring is wide open with absolutely no guidelines. You're giving me all sorts of ideas. I could be the person to sort of pull all of this together. I will start working on your suggestions!

We discussed the value in using high school students, but the need exists to better train them and to educate the parents on the value of using high school students.

Definitely look at Tutor/Mentor Connection and other mentoring program web sites as well."
  • 2000-12-31 Receive this email from Mason Scholl: I saw the front page article in today's Trib about Cabrini Connections. I don't know whether words of congratulations or consolation or both are appropriate. What is the short-term and long-term implications of Wards exit on your work? I also want to let you know that the one of the priorities of the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church as it relates to children is after-school programs. A significant proposal has been sent to the denominations Board of Global Ministries requesting funds for this purpose. This has been pushed by the Aurora District Superintendent, Rev. Learned that they are looking at some changes to the program, primarily focusing its services more on youth as opposed to the entire family, as before. This will allow them to serve more youth. It's not a perfect slot for you, but as I have time to rework the page, we'll do a better job of it. I haven't forgotten you. In fact, am really glad you're doing your thing for our kids. We hope to do a program about the Digital Divide for our librarian colleagues in Atlanta in June 2002. If you know of someone in that region who is doing something similar, I'd appreciate knowing about him/her. We have a representative from the feds, who assists librarians with grants for projects to end the divide (or take a stab at it at least), and we'll need to find someone else to address the issue -- a panel of three. I'd ask you, but I can't afford to fly you down to Atlanta!
  • 2001-01-22 Mark Skibinski from Peoria sent email update: Everything is moving along here. My agency has been in contact with a represenative and he wants to come down and give a presentation to our CEO, myself, and Farrell Davies about his program and I was wondering if you have heard of these groups? I referred him to the Carol Robertson Center which is in the same zip code to ask how they recruit volunteers. I also sent info on volunteer recruitment and retainment.

Recently I had the opportunity to speak at a conference in Chicago for a group that, frankly, I knew very little about. I had agreed to speak at the conference because the person who recommended it to me was someone whose judgment I trust and advice I value. The driving force behind the conference is Dr. Daniel Bassill, who is President of Cabrini Connections and the Tutor/Mentor Connection. If you or your organization are involved in tutoring and mentoring, Dan Bassill is someone you need to know and the May Tutor/Mentor Leadership Conference is an event you need to get on your calendar. • 2005-02-25 Received following message from Clair Keim, from the UK, who has a Churchill Travel Fellowship to visit the USA in 2005 to learn about School based mentoring. This is in response to a message I sent encouraging her organization to host a portion of the May and Nov eConference. " Fantastic! Thanks Daniel. Despite working in a Technology College, IT isn't my strong point, but we do have internet conferencing facilities in the school and i've forwarded your email to various staff who should be able to help with the technical aspects. I've also forwarded it to the 'Learning Mentor Co-ordinator' for the whole of Birmingham. I'm sure she'll be keen to get involved and is regularly in touch with mentors in all of the 100 secondary schools (ages 11-16/18) in the city - Birmingham is apparently the biggest local government education authority in Europe, including a wide range of diverse communities, so there should be plenty of scope for learning from each other. I'll let you know when i hear back from other staff and have more idea about the possibilities at our end. I'll go back to your website for more detailed information about the internet conferences and look forward to making plans.
  • 2005-03-08 Following an email introduction, I met at T/MC office in Chicago with Sarah Pearson, American Youth Policy Forum,1836 Jefferson Place, NW, Washington, DC 20036. Sarah will send copies for the May Confernece and is considering ways to participate in T/MC forums, such as the eConference.
  • 2005-03-11 Received email today from Janet Salmons, who I've worked with previously in conferneces such as Wired.org. She wrote, "When I read your newsletters I always try to think of some way we could do something together again, and this time I have an idea! TechSoup.org has asked me to host an online "event" on the topic of education and the digital divide, focusing on online learning and collaboration tools/spaces. I have a lot of experience with online learning in academic settings, which do bridge the divide for a lot of people who would otherwise not be able to continue their education. I also have a lot of experience with online collaboration. But currently I do not have work going that uses these tools in community-based ways. So I wondered whether you might be interested to join me as a co-host for this proposed event? Between the two of us we cover a lot of ground. If you are interested we can refine these broad topics and decide how to approach the event. " I agreed and we're aiming to host a week-line event during the week of April 18.

This was a comment from Traci Stanley, Director of Youth Development Services at Christopher House: "Thanks to you as well Dan. I hired a new tutoring coordinator this summer to manage Christopher House's tutoring program and she found the conference to be extremely helpful. She and I have done some "debriefing" since the conference and I can definitely say that the training, resources, and networking that she got out of the conference will effectively increase our capacity to serve our children and families. Thanks again!" The attendance was the lowest 2-day attendance since 1994. Those who attended benefited, as the comment above indicates.
