Mapping and GIS

Using maps to show where programs were and where they were missing, set against poverty, schools, violence and businesses. Mapping was one of T/MC’s signature tools.

Items are matched by the words they use, so a few may mention the subject only in passing; the most relevant come first.

  • 1993-02-06 Dan Bassill met with Nick Rieser of the Metro Chicago Information Center. Reiser confirmed my belief that the T/MC's anticipated use of GIS was not being duplicated elsewhere and that it does have a broad community of support. MCIC agreed to map T/MC data, for a small fee, and to provide a list of people to contact.
  • 2000-09-15 Received email from Luz Rivas <Luz@npo.net>, which is a product of the Information Technology Resource Center in Chicago. She wrote: Thanks for the conference information.I'm interested in the survey findings and I hope to attend the workshop. We would be interested in exhibiting. I'm interested in learning more about your mapping and other services. I mainly work with organizations on database development projects and many times I need to refer clients for those services. Also, our business development director was telling me about some business partners that he is currently talking to. I think your organization can fit into those projects. C) Outcomes could be support of T/MC technology, intro to funders and, over time, a distribution strategy of tech firms/tech support to T/M programs
  • 2000-09-26 Manufacturers Bank has a first draft done on the brochure that we designed for them. This uses a T/MC map to show the area within one mile of each different bank location in Chicago, and provides a list of the Tutor/Mentor Programs in that map area. They will print different versions for five different locations and place these at teller stations as handouts.
  • 2000-10-11 Email conversation started with Craig Anthony Thomas, ExDir of the Kalamazoo Chapter of World Organization of Web Masters. By Friday, his message was:"Please re-send as I will bring up your proposal to two groups here -- the Kalamazoo Area Service-Learning Alliance as well as the Kalamazoo chapter of the World Organization of Webmasters. Both meetings take place Tuesday at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. It is my impression from frequent visits to your site that Kalamazoo folks could go piggyback with your efforts in a viable parnership. I'll also check out your upcoming November conference as a in-service training session that our group leaders can attend. The information you share helps me make a compelling case for a partnership.
  • 2000-11-03 Talked with Steven Romalewski of NYPIRG's CMAP project (www.cmap.nypirg.org) an on-line GIS mapping project. Described our goals/needs, possibilities of them serving as partner/project leader on T/MC GIS.
  • 2000-12-15 Received email from Greg Skibinski updating me on work being done in Peoria. He writes, "good things are happening down here in Peoria. I will be the new Co-Chair for Peoria's Promise along with Sue Kingery. My department, Block by Block, will be working together with the United Way to increase our Peoria's Promise effort. We are also applying for two americorp promise fellows to help us with the development of a comprehensive list of providers and services for not only Peoria but our Tri-County Area (Tazewell, Woodford, and Peoria Counties) we will be developing a map for each of these counties as well. Also at this meeting I had a chance to meet our new President of the United Way Michael Stephen and he seemed to be very interested in what Sue and I had to say. We also showed him your CD of your efforts and he was impressed."

  • 2000-12-21 Contacted via email by Dan Burke, Deputy Director for Education, CNA Corporation, Alexandria, VA. He wrote, "I saw your reply about CTC funding and thought you might be able to give me some advice. After reading what you are doing, it seems to fit very well what I would like to try. What tools (GIS) are you using? Would it take a lot of time and/or money investment for me to use them?"

Visit the www.tutormentorconnection.org site for maps and charts illustrating this vision.

He told me of your interest and suggested I check out your ThinkDetroit site, which I did. It appears that we are all on the same wavelength.I hope you will permit me to share in on this venture. I'd love to use it for the site we're building here for the IT Managers Forum, an ad hoc group pooling resources to attract New Economy tools and enterprises. Let me know how we can collaborate.
  • 2001-07-27 Jim Cory reports "that Census 2000 data is available now for Illinois" and he has "since downloaded it, but it is in very raw format. This means that it may take a little while to massage it into what we need. At any rate we can go ahead with plans to update the mentor maps with all new data."
  • 2001-07-30 Received this email today: Hello- You are listed as a contact in a GRASP article for Community Youth Mapping. I'm writing you on behalf of Travis County Afterschool Network (TCAN: http://www.tcantx.org/). We are at the inception of mapping project for the Austin area that will map available afterschool programs in the county. As the GIS/Mapping Coordinator, I'd like to first contact successful programs in other parts of the country. My GIS and mapping skills are solid, but I've never had to prepare a mapping study. If you have any outlines or advice for tackling such a plan, we'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance for you time. Best Regards, Theresa Noyes I sent back an invitation to look at our web sites and consider ways we can support each other.

  • 2001-10-04 Jim Cory has added a new map to the T/MC GIS web site, showing two shootings that took place on Sept. 29th. I emailed the GIS group, and two reporters (Mary Smerch at Tribune and Laura Washington, The Chicago Reporter) with an encouragement to look at the maps and tell others to do the same.
  • 2002-01-06 A set of six maps that show poverty areas in Chicago are now on the GIS web site. These maps show schools on the November State Board of Education warning list, and tutor/mentor programs. We’ve broken the maps down by the time of day the service is available and the age group served. Our maps show many more programs available during the 3-5 time frame when most workplace volunteers are not able to participate in comprehensive tutor/mentor programs. Our maps show fewer programs for high school youth, which is a contributing factor to the high dropout rate of teens. I emailed reporters, columist, editorial people, etc. at the Tribune, SunTimes and WGN Radio to encourage them to use these maps in 2002 stories.
  • 2002-01-09 Judy Markey of WGN Radio called and agreed to put a web link from her Radio site to the Program Links site at the TME. At various times during the year she'll tell listeners that if they want to volunteer they can go to this site to find programs where they can volunteer.
  • 2002-01-17 Margaret Grieco, Visiting Fellow, Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge, UK, posted this message to Global Knowledge Development list: The internet can be used to empower those previously by-passed in decision making processes. The poverty mapping of Chicago (T/MC) is an excellent example. Volunteers in disadvantaged communities can map their experience and regularly update and display it and grow conscious of the overall framework which has historically restricted them." This was part of a longer message. I emailed a follow u p intro and offer to work together to develop GIS resourses more groups could use.

He also has sponsors that would be valuable partners.

Cathy works at BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois and was in the mentoring group that I spoke to in late June. At that point she volunteered to help the T/MC in this effort.

His topic is Use of on-line and paper-and-pencil journaling to inform, improve, and evaluate tutor/mentor programs
  • 2003-08-14 Louis Brass wrote an article titled, Literacy: Reaching for life's road map, which appeared in the 8/14/03 issue of the Batavia Sun. The article told of the T/MC's efforts to help a tutor/mentor network form in the West Suburbs and of the 8/14 meeting planned for the Barnes & Noble store in Geneva.
