  • 1994-11-28 Article in Chicago SunTimes titled "He Traded Wards Job for Tutoring". 11" in size. Written by Frederick Lowe
  • 2000-09-15 Contacted by Frances Roehm <roehf@nslsilus.org> who wrote: I saw your posting on Digital Divide. I'm a librarian at Skokie Public Library, and have concerns about all of our folks having access to the tools and information they need. My particular focus is the development of our online neighbor-hood (http://www.skokienet.org) and job site (http://www.chicagojobs.org). Please tell me more about the Cabrini Connections. Are you developing a mentoring project for the kids? Are you creating online content for folks in the community?
  • 2000-09-22 Received following email from Kurstin Finch Gnehm, Project Manager, Public Libraries as Partners in Youth Development, Urban Libraries Council: I'm the Project Manager for a Wallace-Reader's Digest Funds grant called "Public Libraries as Partners in Youth Development." The grant has been given to nine libraries, plus the Urban Libraries Council to provide T.A. The grant's goal is to help libraries to develop non-school-hour programs that encourage career development, school achievement, life skills, career skills, and positive youth development for teenagers in resource-challenged areas. We heard about your program through the Tutor/Mentor Connection website, which was recommended to us as a valuable tool for designing mentoring programs. I'd like to arrange a visit to your site with one of my colleagues, if that's possible. A great time for us is the 19th or 20th of October. We would love to see the environment and talk to staff! If you could contact me about this, I'd really appreciate it. My contact information is below, and email works great for me.
  • 2000-12-20 Added name of volunteer coordinator from St. Vincent dePaul Center in Chicago to on-line "call to action" letter which is at T/MC web site.
  • 2000-12-29 Matt T. from JACS contacted us looking for Steve R. to get guidance on evaluation. Matt saw Steve's name in our newsletter as the evaluation contact. I referred Matt to this website and said he could contact Steve via e-mail. We began talking about JACS program and how they are modifying it from telephone contact with many (1,000s??) Job Corps graduates to providing more extensive support to fewer students in two states. We talked a little about structuring a one-on-one relationship with a volunteer mentor and the need for JACS staff to support the mentors. I referred him to Tim H. from Mercy Home for an idea of how many mentors one staff person could support. Matt asked if we could talk in the future about training and supporting mentors. I, of course, said "Yes"!
  • 2001-01-05 Contacted Ron A. with the ACE mentoring program in the Fox Valley (IL) area. Learned about this program that exposes high school to careers in Architecture, Construction and Engineering (i.e. ACE), through a Chicago Tribune article. The program is in its first year and is going well. The program idea is modeled after a similar program in NYC.
  • 2001-01-11 Contacted Onward Neighborhood House as part of our outreach efforts. Learned that they are collaborating with East Village and that 7-8 of their students to East Village for tutoring. Onward is also part of a collaboration with Erie and Association Houses and other agencies for Youth Options Unlimited. In addition, learned that Onward recived a grant from Kraft to start a career-related mentoring program. I provided some ideas of how to implement this. I also suggested to try to incorporate it into what they are already doing, as opposed to creating something new and separate. I also suggested they contact some of their current collaboration partners for ideas, including Erie Neighborhood House who had been offering a career mentoring program in the past, I believe. In addition, I sent some how to start a program information.
  • 2001-01-17 Meeting of Chicago Bar Foundation Lend A Hand Advisory Council was held this morning. Attended by about 8 people. Guidelines for grant making were further refined, focusing on programs with at least 50% of students in one-on-one matches, extending the funding area to all of Cook County, and developing proposal instructions which should result in programs doing a better job of describing what they do.
  • 2001-01-22 Received email from Frances Roehm, SkokieNet Librarian. She wrote: "I've linked to you from the ChicagoJobs page. It's not a perfect slot for you, but as I have time to rework the page, we'll do a better job of it. I haven't forgotten you. In fact, am really glad you're doing your thing for our kids. We hope to do a program about the Digital Divide for our librarian colleagues in Atlanta in June 2002. If you know of someone in that region who is doing something similar, I'd appreciate knowing about him/her. We have a representative from the feds, who assists librarians with grants for projects to end the divide (or take a stab at it at least), and we'll need to find someone else to address the issue -- a panel of three. I'd ask you, but I can't afford to fly you down to Atlanta!
  • 2001-02-09 Spoke with Philip J. from the Blackstar Project as part of our outreach efforts. Learned about the program, which according to Philip J., is the "largest classroom mentoring program" operating. Blackstar focuses on youth in grades 6-8 who attend either a public school, private school or Catholic school. The program "mentors" nine thousand youth in 70 school. Philip J. said that Blackstar uses a curriculum, but did not want to share the specifics. He did say that the curriculum reinforces academics and career counseling. The program also has 120 mentors.
  • 2001-02-27 Val Parker, of Power 4 Youth in California sent email which read: I am interested in finding out again about your May conference schedule. Could you email or send me dates and materials? I will try to work it into my schedule, as I enjoyed it much last year. Thank you. Also, if I come to Chicago, may I visit Cabrini Connections? Thank you again for your Board information. I think we are moving along, with a goal job descriptions and new board members by May 3. If I see you in May, perhaps we can talk more.
  • 2001-03-29 Received email from Shannah Compton of Hometown Cinema. She wrote, "We have offices in both Indy and Los Angeles. I spend most of the time in Los Angeles developing relationships with HOllywood professionals and securing sponsors etc. I would love to talk with you about how we can go beyond kids making films and start school-to-career mentoring programs. The Indianapolis community seems very open to such a situation and I have to believe that other cities would as well.

We've borrowed our name and many of our working concepts from the T/MC, and we encourage other organizations and communities to consider a similar strategy. Visit the www.tutormentorconnection.org site for maps and charts illustrating this vision.

Thanks to thousands of volunteers, a growing number of underprivileged students are getting help to succeed in school and go on to find rewarding careers. Chicago's Cabrini Connections is a leader in this movement. For many years Columbia College students and faculty have helped this organization mobilize volunteers, business partners, and philanthropists to support tutor/mentor programs in every poverty area of Chicago. Through the Internet it shares this strategy with the world.
