- 2000-10-07 Leo Quigley of Community Builders, Inc. confirmed a meeting with Dan Bassill on Oct 13th. He initiated the meeting following earlier email contact from Dan.
- 2000-12-07 Dan B participated in Technology Networking event at Union League Club. Networked with people like Melissa Giovagnoli of Networlding (whom I'd already had previous contact) and met people like Larry Mohl, Director, Center for Learning and Knowledge Managment at Motorola. Another speaker was Eric Lannert, of www.nminds.com. He's a tutor at Cabrini-Green Tutoring Program, a leader of icStars and his company hosts executive level communities. Ended meeting with suggestion that the participants become an on-going "community".
- 2001-01-02 Tea Akbar, Executive Director of Partners in Education, sponsored by 4th Presbyterian Church in Chicago, called to offer following news. 1) she's moving to board of education and her spot will not be filled; 2) she is recommending that 4th Church consider becoming a major sponsor of Cabrini Connections since they are considering adopting an off-site program
- 2001-02-07 We were contacted by Saul A. from the Chicago Youth Centers Lower North Center for help/information on starting a mentoring program. I sent her the "How To Start a Program" handout from the conference and the National Mentoring Partnership checklist. I also told her about the website and said she should call us back for more specific help.
- 2001-02-08 Met with the Rev. Dr. Walter B. Johnson, Jr., Pastor of the Wayman African methodist Episcopal Church to discuss his after-school program which is part of the Alliance for Community Peace. Learned that Wayman Church along with other churches on the near north side, have formed the Near North Ministry Alliance, which in turn started the Alliance for Community Peace in 1997. Work of the ACP includes in-school and after-school tutoring and mentoring an enrichment activities.
- 2001-04-18 Phone conversation with Blake Levenson, board member for Cabrini-Green Youth and Family Services. Exchanged goal info and mutual opportunities. Blake runs a small advertising company. We first met at the March 2001 IYP Video Festival.
- 2001-05-21 Interviewed by two Northwestern U. Journalism students for class assignment. Provided information on T/MC and other Cabrini Green contacts.
- 2001-09-05 Received following email from Mahesh N. Alur, PhD Candidate, Northwestern University Medical School. He contacted T/MC on 9/1 and offered to raise money for Cabrini Connections through his running in the Chicago Marathon. The email was sent to his friends: Dear Family, Friends, and Colleagues, As some of you know, I am running in my first marathon on October 7, 2001, in Chicago! I thought that this race would be a great opportunity to raise some money for a cause that has become increasingly important to me. During the past year, I tutored an eighth grade student who attended St. Joseph's and lives in the Cabrini Green Housing Project. I found it to be a very rewarding experience, and I believe that a small fundraising campaign would help tremendously a program, the community, and most significantly, the students who deserve the educational opportunities that most of us were fortunate to receive. Cabrini Connections is very similar to the program in which I participated. Not only does it provide tutoring by bringing together working professionals and students from educationally disadvantaged environments, it also attempts to coordinate tutoring across Chicago and the country. It does this by using the internet coupled with marketing and advertising approaches in order to expand outreach and knowledge on issues of poverty and education. The idea is that each tutoring program can learn from each others' experiences in how to reach students and how to attract volunteers. In fact, Cabrini Connections was the organization that helped me to find the tutoring opportunity at St. Joseph's at this time last year. I know that most of you on this e-mail list are of meager means (financially-speaking), but even small donations will be extremely helpful. For those of you who would like to donate a larger amount, all donations to Cabrini Connections are tax deductible. Please do not feel obligated to donate, but if you would like to support me -- and more importantly, these students -- your donation would be met by my undying gratitude. Additionally, please pass this message along to people who I may have missed or to others who would be interested in donating. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me.
- 2004-08-28 First Annual Rock for Reading Music Festival held in Chicago. Organized by music artist Alice Peacock, and sponsored by The Chicago Sun Times, this event was designed to raise visibility for reading programs and raise money for four charities: The Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Public Library, New City YMCA and Tutor/Mentor Connection. The T/MC used the event to raise visibility and help recruit volunteers for tutor/mentor programs. Five organizations participated in recruiting volunteers: East Village Youth Program, Cabrini-Green Tutoring Program, CYCLE, Project Education Plus and Cabrini Connections. Unfortunately, it rained all day and was cold. Few people attended and the event was ended at 7pm instead of 11pm. While this means that few dollars were raised, the event led to many networking connections that the T/MC and others can use in the future.
- 2004-11-08 Dan Bassill of T/MC was guest of Sherrard Jones of Sinai Mentoring on a Channel 21 Public Access TV show. The focus was the workshop Sherrod was leading to engage hospitals strategically in leadership of neighborhood tutor/mentor strategies. During the call in segment, Henry Warfield, a young man who had been part of the Montgomery Ward/Cabrini Green Tutoring Program, led by Dan from 1975-1992, called in to testify as to how important the program had been to him and how much Dan Bassill had helped him and many other kids. Henry was in 2nd grade when he joined the program in the early 80's and he stayed active through 10th or 11th grade. He now is an engineer working at O'Hare Airport.
- 2005-01-04 Met with Cynthia Hunt of PriceWaterhouseCoopers to provide information about the Tutor/Mentor Connection.
- 2005-01-07 The Children & Family Justice Center of the Northwestern University School of Law will host the May 2005 Tutor/Mentor Leadership and Networking Conference on May 12 and 13. This is a result of the participation of Besty Clarke, Illinois Juvenile Justice Initiative, in the Nov. 04 conference, as well as networking between IJJI and the T/MC for several previous years. Betsty was a volunteer tutor with the Montgomery Ward/Cabrini Green Tutoring Program in the late 1970's.
- Undated Don Samuelson, of DSSA, sent the following email to Beth Anderson, Gary Goldman, Think Detroit, and a few others. He wrote, " Beth: Suggest you and others interested in this contact Dan Bassill at tutormentor2@earthlink.net. Has been doing good work in the Cabrini Green neighborhood and other parts of Chicago for a long time. Has some very well developed programs and ideas. His is a wheel that doesn't have to be discovered."
