- 1995-11-19 Colleen Maia, the Coordinator for Cluster Tutoring Program in the Austin community on Chicago's West Side, wrote in a letter to the Editor of the Chicago Tribune, dated Sunday, Nov 19, 1995, titled 'Tutor success story'. She spoke of the success stories her tutor mentor program had been able to bring about, but there is a dire need for more such programs with more support from the community by volunteering and raising money.
- 2001-01-19 John Morrison, a professor at Aurora University, called for information to help start a tutor/mentor program at the Third Unitarian Church in the Austin area of Chicago. We talked of how the "business plan and research" for such a program could be student work/graduate studies of business and social work students at Auora.
- 2001-07-30 Received this email today: Hello- You are listed as a contact in a GRASP article for Community Youth Mapping. I'm writing you on behalf of Travis County Afterschool Network (TCAN: http://www.tcantx.org/). We are at the inception of mapping project for the Austin area that will map available afterschool programs in the county. As the GIS/Mapping Coordinator, I'd like to first contact successful programs in other parts of the country. My GIS and mapping skills are solid, but I've never had to prepare a mapping study. If you have any outlines or advice for tackling such a plan, we'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance for you time. Best Regards, Theresa Noyes I sent back an invitation to look at our web sites and consider ways we can support each other.
- 2004-01-21 Met with Rev. Sharon Hicks, ED of Village Resource Ministries, a new tutor/mentor program in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago. She had been referred to T/MC from the office of Rep. Danny Davis. Spent two and one-half hours showing strategies for starting and sustainig a tutor/mentor program, and ways here program could be a T/MC in faith networks and in the Austin area.
- 2004-10-04 Sharon Caldwell of the YMCA of Chicago emailed to say, "Just wanted to let you know that, miraculously, we received the Mentoring funds we applied for in July from the Department of Education to serve North Lawndale and Austin. We are completely shocked and so very grateful. Thanks so much for the help you provided to us at that time. As you may recall, our request included $1,150 in contractual funds that will go to TM/C each of the three years for "consultation and/or specialized training." Looking forward to working together to expand these crucial services on the west side.
- 2005-01-28 T/MC and Sherard Jones of Sinai Community Institute met to talk strategies for annual Volunteer Recruitment Campaign. Sherard will take lead in mobilizing programs centered around the Austin/Lawndale/Oak Park area of Chicago's West side
- 2005-05-04 Sherard Jones of Sinai Mentoring Institute sent this email: Two weeks ago, I presented to the CEOs of the system. They liked what they saw, and I've been given the go ahead to move forward. Next week I'll be meeting with the VP under whose auspices the proposed program would fall. Thank you for encouraging me to move forward with this concept. It looks like we're making progress. Should you have any other guidance to share (once your hands aren't so full), I'll be ready to listen. By the way, the Harriet Barlowe piece really struck pay dirt because our CEO is actually from NY and was very familiar with her work.
