Become part of the Tutor/Mentor Conference. Lead a Workshop
or be part of a panel discussion.
Tutor/Mentor Leadership and Networking Conference will be held on
May 19 and 20, 2011 at Victory Apostolic Church in Matteson, IL.
We have some speakers and workshops already in place, but are
reaching out to you to invite submissions for additional
workshops. Suggested topics are listed below.

Confirmed workshops and Speakers.
Philip Jackson, CEO of the Black Star Project, will be speaking
during the mid-day session on May 19. Philip has become a major
advocate for youth over the past few years and is mobilizing
volunteers and donors to support tutor/mentor programs
throughout the South part of Chicago and South Suburbs.
* Collective Action – what can we do together
that we cannot accomplish working alone.
Dan Bassill, President of Tutor/Mentor Connection will speak on this topic and focus
on actions that can help mobilize volunteers and donors to support
tutor/mentor programs as school starts in August/September 2011.
Other speakers with expertise in collaboration and collective
action are invited to submit workshop proposals.
* Social Networking: Jacquita Smith (Camp of Dreams)
plans to lead 2 sessions on social networking (one for beginners,
and one more advanced)
* Volunteer Recruitment and Retention: Christy Beighe-Byrne (CYC)
and Joel Newman (BBBS) will lead a workshop/panel discussion.
* Bringing a Community Development Approach to Mentoring:
Angie Hocking from Yonge Street Mission in Toronto is tentatively scheduled to present this
workshop in May.
* Mobile Marketing Panel Discussion: See discussion of

We’re trying to build the follow up panel and we’d like to invite people representing
"other relevant actors" such as: 1) someone from a phone company;
2) someone from a major marketing company; and 3) a leader from a tutor/mentor program.

Workshops Suggestions. The conferences are the result of many
organizations coming together to share ideas, experiences and build networks.
If you can be a speaker or part of a panel for these

* Program Spotlights: Do you want the stage for 10 minutes
to briefly telling about what your program is doing?
Email Karina Walker to become part of a workshop/panel that showcases different
programs serving the Chicago region or Northern Indiana.
* Tutoring and /or Mentoring - Train the Trainer
What resources do you use to train and support volunteer tutors and mentors?
Share your expertise so others can build their own capacity based on
what you are doing in your own organization.
* How can volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs part of Drop-Out
Prevention strategies? Program leaders, researchers and/or
workforce development leaders are invited to talk about this topic.
Role of Faith Communities and Business in mobilizing support
for volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs. The articles on the T/MC
web site point to the role intermediaries can take in helping tutor/mentor
programs grow. Who is doing this well and will share their ideas?

* Fundraiser events: Highsight has created a successful annual fund raiser
called Eve of the Eve. Big Brothers hosts an annual
Bowling and Golf Fund raising events. We’d like to invite tutor/mentor programs
to share their experiences in organizing fund raising events.
* Funders of Tutor/Mentor Programs - Panel
Foundations that fund tutor/mentor programs are invited to attend and
present information about funding guidelines. New donors are invited to
attend and learn ways to add support for tutor/mentor programs.
* Empowering volunteers as fundraisers – How is your organization empowering
volunteers to be part of on-going fund raising. The Cabrini Madness
event of Cabrini Connections engages more than 100 youth,
volunteers and friends. Who else would want to talk about their experience in this area?
* Blogging best practices - This link (http://tinyurl.com/TMC-blogroll )
points to blogs written by many different people who share
ideas related to learning, fund raising, non profit management, etc.

involved, how they advocate for the program, what they
