Sharing Resonpsibility for Reducing Poverty

"My 15-year old son is being recruited by a gang. He is cutting school and failing his classes. He is o­n an IEP in school and receiving no additional tutoring or support. I know my son is at high risk of joining a gang. I would like direction to a support organization or mentor."



Note: This is o­ne of many appeals we receive from parents looking for help. It's frustrating not to be able to find enough donors to support our work, or to make comprehensive tutor/mentor programs available in every poverty neighborhood.  Please join in the Discussion Forums to help change this.

Open Letter to the Editorial and Publishing Staff of the Chicago Tribune, written in November of a past year.

Note: The Tutor/Mentor Connection sends many letters to the Editor to Chicago media. Since 1994 several have been printed, but most are not printed. We've made a practice of putting some of these o­n our web sites so that visitors to the T/MC can read these comments even if the media don't have space to print them.

T/MC Editorial: Benton Harbor Riots follow-up. Open Letter to Leaders

During the week of June 16, 2003 newsmedia around the country have been using major headlines to draw attention to the Benton Harbor riots. Mary Mitchell, a writer for the Chicago Sun Times, wrote a commentary titled "Benton Harbor warnings are the kind ignored elsewhere." I'm sure if I searched the papers from other cities I'd find similar warnings.
