I use maps of Chicago to show high poverty areas and to point to locations of volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs. I post graphics like this on my Tutor/Mentor Blog.
Until we find ways to connect youth, volunteers, leaders, donors and policy makers from each of these different organizations and from business, religion, philanthropy, higher education, government, media, etc. we'll never have consistent strategies reaching young people in all poverty neighborhoods. I feel we put too much responsibility on the non profit for organizing, raising money, operating effective programs, etc. Using the internet I feel we can distribute leadership to many groups throughout an urban area, or the country, with each innovating ways to mobilize talent, dollars, ideas and other resources to help constantly improving non profits be available in more of the places where they are most needed. This set of articles offer recommended reading that can help people understand the Challenges Facing Non Profit organizations. Help them overcome these challenges and we get better long-term results. |
