More than 200 lawyers, judges, public leaders and youth attended the MY HERO AWARDS event on July 28th in Chicago.
The goal of the MY HERO AWARD lunch was to recognize lawyers, judges and law firms that are providing outstanding support to volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs in Chicago, and to honor the memory of the Hon. Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz, who helped launch the Lend A Hand Program at the Chicago Bar Association/Foundation in 1993. The goal was more than met, as speaker after speaker told why mentoring is important and how Judge Abe was an influence in their lives. As some one said, it was a "love fest" for mentoring and Judge Abe.The MY HERO AWARD lunch kicks off the Tutor/Mentor Connection's Annual Chicagoland Tutor/Mentor Volunteer Recruitment Campaign, intended to draw volunteers and donors to every tutor/mentor program in the Chicago region. one lawyer who received an award said to the T/MC, "My company has sent out messages to every branch encouraging people to consider being a volunteer." His company also provided a $1,000 contribution to recognize time two employees spend volunteering with Cabrini Connections. This illustrates how events like the My Hero Awards can draw attention and support to tutor/mentor programs throughout the city. If such events are repeated in many industries, more volunteers will become involved.Visit the Program Locator section to find information about tutor/mentor programs serving Chicago and use the volunteer links section to learn about volunteer opportunities in Chicago and anywhere else in the country. Note: Volunteers are needed as leaders, donors, and to host programs like the LEND A HAND in companies and professional associations throughout the country.
