Cabrini Connections' Success Steps
By nsbyrer @ 4:09 PM :: 1454 Views :: :: Cabrini Connections | |
The Tutor/Mentor Connection (T/MC) draws its inspiration from the Cabrini Connections tutor/mentor program which meets at 800 W. Huron in Chicago.
The Tutor/Mentor Connection was created in 1993 by the volunteers who organized Cabrini Connections in 1992. The original goal was to provide tutoring/mentoring to 7th to 12th grade youth who had participated in the Montgomery Ward/Cabrini Green Tutoring Program from 2nd to 6th grade.
The Cabrini Connections program started with 7 volunteers and 5 7th and 8th grade teens in January 1992. It has grown every year by adding new 7th and 8th graders. By 1997 the annual enrollment was around 90 teens, and the first kids who had joined in 1993 were beginning to reach high school graduation.
The Cabrini Connections program connects workplace volunteers with teens in one-on-one and group learning activities. While volunteers typically participate on one day of the week, students in the program are eligible and encouraged to participate in many different learning activites. Students are also encouraged to use the Cabrini Connections center as a study hall, even on days when no formal session is held.
The Cabrini Connections action plan follows several Success Steps. These are a sequence of necessary steps that a program must include if youth who join at 7th or 8th grade are to complete high school and successfully move to jobs and careers. We encourage you to borrow these Success Steps for your own program. If your own action plan has proven to be successful, we encourage you to share it via a web site and send us the ULR so we can link to your site. Learn more about Cabrini Connections and the Success Steps at http://www.cabriniconnections.net/success.html
Expanding Experiences is one part of the Success Steps Strategy. Two to four Cabrini Connections teens are able to travel to Ireland each summer as part of a program sponsored by The Center for Cultural Interchange (CCI. Learn more about CCI at http://www.cci-exchange.com/about.htm
Note: Volunteers who first joine Cabrini Connections between 1993 and 1997 helped create the Tutor/Mentor Connection and have helped raise all of the money that funds the Tutor/Mentor Connection. At the same time, the growth of the Tutor/Mentor Connection has helped recruit volunteers and donors to support Cabrini Connections.
We encourage other tutor/mentor organizations to duplicate this strategy, leading T/MC type learning, networking and collaboration activities in a neighborhood or in an entire city. |
