More than 120 people attended, coming from Arizona, Virginia, Mississippi, Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, and of course Chicago and other parts of Illinois.  We thank everyone who volunteered time as speakers and panel members, and who just made time to attend.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES WITH T/MC
By nsbyrer @ 4:52 PM :: 2008 Views :: Article Rating :: Cabrini Connections, Events, T/MC, Volunteering
It takes a village to raise a child. Volunteers are needed who will use their talent to help build strong tutor/mentor programs. Not everyone can be a one-on-one tutor/mentor and not everyone can be a high powered fund raiser. However non profits have the same functional responsibilities of for profit businesses. Since dollars are so scarce to hire professional staff, volunteers are needed to play important roles in these organizations.

Call us (312-492-9614) or email (tutormentor2@earthlink.net ) if you are interested in helping the Tutor/Mentor Connection on one or more of the project areas described in this article.. This list is organized alphabetically. Volunteers can serve on more than one committee and can also be one-on-one tutors/mentors in Cabrini Connections or any other tutor/mentor program in Chicago or another city at the same time as they volunteer with the T/MC.

We've organized this site to help visitors find information to help them operate a tutor/mentor program, or to build a network of support for one or more tutor/mentor programs in a city or geographic area. This site is for business and foundation leaders, media, political and faith leaders, as well as educators, tutors, mentors, and tutor/mentor program leaders. We're constantly looking for ways to help you find and use this information. We rely almost totally on volunteers to do this work. The data show that not even half of these children meet state standards, which means that approximately 400,000 boys and girls from low-income families are struggling.These are a lot of kids who face a very bleak future. The consequences for these children, their families, their communities and our state are costly and troublesome. The crisis is real and the crisis is big.

Every day in America, a child's life is needlessly lost. Some die by bullets. Some by abuse. Some by neglect. Too many die from lost hope because America has not provided the tools, education, adult support and resources.

Note: Our vision is that some day in the future when a journalist reports a story, he/she will automatically end it with web links that point to "The Rest of the Story".  Such a strategy will lead people from negative news to positive actions that change the future for kids living in poverty.  Join the media strategies discussion group and share your ideas for how to make this a reality.

Faith-based tutoring/mentoring strategies that any group can benefit from

One person trained twelve human beings who went on to so influence the world that time itself is now recorded as being before (B.C.) or after (A.D.) his existence.

This quote was taken from the introduction of the book "Jesus, CEO: Using Ancient Wisdom for Visionary Leadership", written by Laurie Beth Jones and published by Hyperion.It shows how much power one person has to change the world. We hope it inspires church leaders to use there communications systems to change the future for millions of at-risk youth throughout America, and the world.

While some have responded positively to this, we're still a voice in the wilderness and depend mostly on volunteers to do our work.

Fund Raising Resources for Tutor/Mentor Programs
By nsbyrer @ 4:20 PM :: 1296 Views :: Article Rating :: Funding and Philanthropy
INDEPENDENT SECTOR Endorses General Operating Support Grants as a preferred Funding Mechanism(Washington, DC, April 8, 2004)- INDEPENDENT SECTOR has endorsed recommendations from a group of nonprofit and philanthropic leaders that encourage foundations to give general operating support grants in order to provide the most flexible funding to their nonprofit partners.

Note:

If we can teach charities and donors to choose a cause and find an information portal, such as this, that shows the long-term work needed for a tutor/mentor program to help a youth to a career, then we can teach the donor to pick a charity based on where the need is greatest (map) and what organization is providing service in that zip code (Program Locator). once a donor gets to the few tutor/mentor program choices that exist in a zip code, it is up to the donor to determine how much he/wants to help, then write a check and send it to the organization. If an organization maintains a web site that shows why they are needed, where they are needed, where they operate and what services they provide, the donor should be able to choose between multiple organizations providing the same service in the same neighborhood. If your tutor/mentor program has a web site, you can put its link in the LINKS section of this web site. You can also email tutormentor2@earthlink.net to add it to the Program Locator database.

ANNUAL CALENDAR
By nsbyrer @ 4:18 PM :: 1159 Views :: Article Rating
Since it was launched in January 1994, the T/MC has developed a calendar of events and a media plan to promote the need for tutoring and mentoring in poverty neighborhoods throughout Chicago. Each event on this calendar provides direct support to hundreds of tutor/mentor programs, and builds public awareness for every tutor/mentor program in the Chicago region. Furthermore, each event builds momentum and participation of tutor/mentor program partners to the next event

Note: Programs that have a steady source of flexible revenue can use this process to constantly improve the impact they have on youth and adults. Very few programs have such a source of revenue, which is why the T/MC invites programs to work together to innovate new ways to draw funds to all volunteer based tutor/mentor programs, rather than just a few.

No Child Left Behind, The Rest of the Story
By nsbyrer @ 4:15 PM :: 1532 Views :: Article Rating :: Education to Career
On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, July 18, 19 and 20, 2004, the Chicago Tribune devoted half its front page, plus full inside pages of the first section of the paper to a Special Report: No Child Left Behind. The focus of this series was on "One Girl's Struggle to find a Future". You may still be able to find this story in the archives of the on-line Chicago Tribune at http://www.chicagotribune.com   It did a great job of drawing attention to the challenges faced by kids living in innercity neighborhoods.

However, it did not tell The Rest of the Story

Note:

Visit the Education to Career Links section of the Tutor/Mentor Library to find ideas and resources to help your organization build its strategy for mentoring kids to careers.  Join the Discussion forum to share ideas and collaborate on strategies that give you the resources needed to put these good ideas to work in your program or community.

Cabrini Connections' Success Steps
By nsbyrer @ 4:09 PM :: 1384 Views :: Article Rating :: Cabrini Connections
The Tutor/Mentor Connection (T/MC) draws its inspiration from the Cabrini Connections tutor/mentor program which meets at 800 W. Huron in Chicago.

Note: Volunteers who first joine Cabrini Connections between 1993 and 1997 helped create the Tutor/Mentor Connection and have helped raise all of the money that funds the Tutor/Mentor Connection.  At the same time, the growth of the Tutor/Mentor Connection has helped recruit volunteers and donors to support Cabrini Connections.

We encourage other tutor/mentor organizations to duplicate this strategy, leading T/MC type learning, networking and collaboration activities in a neighborhood or in an entire city.

By nsbyrer @ 3:46 PM :: 1646 Views :: Article Rating :: Advocacy
This report, authored by Mr. Glen McGee, former Superintendent of Schools for the Sate of Illinois, provides arguments that support the growth of non-school tutor/mentor programs.

Note: This report has much to offer. The challenge is increasing the number of people interested in closing the gap and getting them to find and read such reports. The Links section of this web site includes links to many reports like this. The Discussion portal provides a place where people can meet and discuss this information, then determine ways to act to change the level of non-school support available to youth and families.

These Are Our Children, editorial by Joseph Wall, Childrens Court Judge
By nsbyrer @ 3:44 PM :: 2896 Views :: Article Rating :: Advocacy
This article was written for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The link below the first section takes you to the JSOnline web site where you can read and forward the story to others. While Judge Wall writes about Milwaukee, he could be writing about Chicago, Detroit, New York or an other major city in America.

Note: The Tutor/Mentor Connection does not need to author powerful stories with compelling reasons for people to become involved with programs that help inner city kids. We just need to find ways to recirculate these stories to a wider audience so that they motivate more people to become involved.
