Demographic Differences in Patterns of Youth Out-of-School Time Activity Participation

Harvard Family Research Project (HFRP) staff published an article in the inaugural issue of the "Journal of Youth Development: Bridging Research and Practice." The article describes demographic gaps in participation across a range of activity types and multiple indicators of participation (e.g., intensity and breadth).

The findings from this study provide further evidence that many youth who are in greatest need of nonschool opportunities, and who may be most able to benefit, are participating less than their more advantaged peers. Although this message may not be new, the results from analysis of these national datasets lends credibility to the growing evidence base that we need to better target resources to underserved populations, especially focusing on low-income youth whose parents have minimal postsecondary education. Note: Discuss this article in the Discussion Forums. What can be done to increase the availability of tutor/mentor programs in areas where they are most needed, and to encourage greater participation of youth and volunteers?
