Literacy in America
, a book by Edward E. Gordon and Elaine H. Gordon. In this book the authors examined how Americans, through such major periods of history as the colonial, early national, and frontier eras, became literate in a variety of changing geographical, social, and economic contexts. In their conclusion the Gordons argue that literacy education cannot be left to schools alone. Just as they examined the variety of ways that American used to attain literacy in the past, they point to a variety of ways that can be used to enhance the development of literacy in the contemporary American situation.
