Although standards vary widely by state and school district, most sets of standards address a common set of expectations for young people in core academic subjects.
At a basic level, knowledge about your school district's standards will improve your ability to provide high-quality homework help and tutoring at your tutor/mentor program or youth center.
For example, most districts now publish grade-level, required-reading lists. If your staff knew that all sixth-graders must read The Secret Garden, you could develop fun activities that give volunteers and young people opportunities to read, write about and discuss topics from the book.
