The Social Impact Research Center of the Heartland Alliance published a wide range of data showing poverty in Illinois.  This link points to the recently released 2016 Report on Poverty

There is a lot of data in these reports. Spend time looking at the information. If you're a teacher, perhaps you could engage youth in looking at the data, then creating reports that make sense of the data to other people.

Here's a report created by the Tutor/Mentor Institute, LLC in 2011 showing the number of high poverty youth, age 6-17 living in each Chicago community area. The data came from the Social Impact Research Center.
