"Volunteer" Does Not Mean "No Pay"
By Bill_Huddleston @ 10:34 AM :: 491 Views :: 0 Comments :: Research and Advocacy , Fund Raising Ideas

The non-profit sector wastes a lot of time debating unimportant semantic issues, instead of concentrating on the real work that needs to be done.  This article, originally a blog post on www.cfctreasures.wordpress.com comments about the current debate about what the word "volunteer" means.  Since many mentors are from organizations that believe in having their employees (while being paid) provide service to the community, it is particularly applicable to the TutorMentorConnection website.

It Takes Guts To Handle Today's Hot Issues

Consider this: anyone can feed the poor - how about reducing poverty in the first place?

chili pepper imageThe hard things - things like ending poverty, reducing violence, building affordable housing, providing healthcare, fighting discrimination, winning peace and meeting urgent needs - are what Community Shares of Illinois does every day in communities like yours across the state of Illinois through our 82 member groups. We're tackling and solving issues at the roots, rather than just treating the symptoms.

Our statewide members produce measurable impact in their communities by creatively solving problems at the core. This work is often called social change.  This is the type of change that has staying power--its impact affects lives for generations to come.

Like to help us take a bite out of the hot issue that's close to your heart?  Then consider a volunteer opportunity with one of our member organizations.  If extra time is a problem but not a few extra dollars, consider makng a donation.

Join us in this gutsy work.  You'll like the taste of change.

Great way for seniors with IRAs to support charities and save tax dollars
By tutormentor2 @ 10:49 AM :: 371 Views :: 0 Comments :: Fund Raising Ideas

In the recent passage of the Pension Protection of 2006 there is a special ruling for 2006 and 2007 that permits persons 70 1/2 and older to use up to $100,000 from their individual retirement accounts (IRAs) to make direct donations to the recognized 501-c-3 charities of their choice.

There are two benefits from this ruling. Contributions from the donor's IRA directed to the charity will not be taxed and will also be counted toward satisfying the donor's calculated Minimum Required Distribution amount for the year. This will especially benefit those donors who don't itemize their charitable contributions for income tax deductions.

How does it work? If your IRA is held with a mutual fund company, for example, you can request the company to send you an IRA checkbook on your IRA account. Then you can write a check to the charity for the amount that you wish to donate. For example, suppose your Minimum Required Distribution (MRD) is calculated to be $3,000 and you wish to write a check for $500 on your IRA account made payable to the charity. You would receive a credit of $500 toward satisfying your 2006 MRD requirement and you would pay income tax on only the remaining $2,500.

It is important to note that the donation has to go directly from your IRA fund to the charity. It cannot be released to you first with you then making the contribution to the charity.

This ruling can be a great way for seniors with IRAs to use Uncle Sam toward lowering the cost of their donations while increasing the amount they can give to their favorite charities.
