Here are two places on the CNN web site that you might want to visit.
One recognizes people who do extraordinary things to help others. This is the CNN Heroes page. Another offers advise for charitable giving to large national organizations.
Here's another example of how Heroes are being recognized by corporate America. These awards are being given in every major Bank of America market, including Chicago.
I'm sure other companies and media are providing charity advise and honoring local heroes. If you know of some, why not help me build a list, by posting the information as a comment below.
