| I'm Denis Rigdon with Project HOPE, a faith-based mentoring and community development organization working in MO and IL. We've found the need to develop social entrepreneurism so what we produce that benefits our participants can produce income for our program. We believe that what we create should be able to fund our operations if it does, indeed, provide the impetus and tools for life transformation, mentoring, development and implementation of a life plan, etc. for participants in the mentoring process. We need foundation support, however, to make this possible. We have a vehicle porgram that has provided nearly 200 vehicles and repaired another 200+ over the past 8 years. Now we are working in housing to promote rural community revitalization through the development of pre-engineered home factories that produce affordable, zero energy homes. This will allow people to purchase homes that are affordable initially and then have no net utility bill or, preferably, produce a surplus of energy for their community to meet the needs of businesses to be recruited and for people making their homes in the area of the plant or the "green" home development. We just need access to people who are interested in helping to get this off the ground and helping to track results for communities and homeowners. We are doing a regional capital campaign to initiate this effort that includes working with a Brad Pitt-developed initiative to replace homes lost in the Gulf with pre-engineered, green homes built in plants along the Mississippi River, from where the homes could be shipped by barge to help with shipping costs, access, etc. You can contact us through our web site: www.phope.net, on which we are working through an AT&T Excelerator grant to provide more interactive connections and software access for mentors, tutors, etc. who would like to track the progress of their participants and their life plans for success. |

Questions: Do you fund...
Question 1: Does MacArthur give to direct service? Answer: No, but yes. They say they don't, but sometimes they do. It never hurts to ask!
Question 2: Do your organizations give funding to cities outside of Chicago, and outside of Cook County? Is there a website to go to for details? Answer: Karina said yes. Troy said not usually, only in very special cases. Spruiell said yes as they give nationally.
Question 3: Do any of your programs support college mentoring or tutoring programs? Answer: Karina said they will be revisiting their guidelines and they may be in the future. Troy said not usually. Spruiell said yes.

Questions about Application Process:
Question 1: What are your procedures for applying for the grants? Answer: not answered

Question 3: What types of evaluation/measurement approaches do your find most compelling? Answer: not answered
Question 4: What are you looking for when you are asking a program to demonstrate sustainability? Most 501c3 programs depend on continous donor funding. Are you looking sustainability beyond that? Answer: Spruiell said that his foundation is looking to fund organizations that will use the money in a way that leads to them eventually no needing the money any longer.
