The goal of the Tutor/Mentor Leadership Conference (http://www.tutormentorconference.bigstep.com )is to connect leaders and supporters of volunteer based tutoring, mentoring and education-to-career programs with each other, and with knowledge, that can help each individual tutor/mentor location become a better "business" of sustaining comprehensive, long-term mentoring which results in youth entering careers, and mentors who become leaders and change-agents. Each conference offers workshops on planning, evaluation, recruitment and training, marketing and development, as well as specific topics related to tutoring and/or mentoring of youth at different age ranges.

The timing of each T/MC conference is strategic. The November Conference takes place after programs have recruited and placed volunteers with students at the beginning of the school year. This conference is intended to provide ideas for programs and for volunteers. Our goal is to help each program convert volunteers into more effective tutors and/or mentors, and into leaders who will use their personal and professional talents to help programs grow.

In November we have another goal. This conference intends to increase public awareness. It can help recruit more volunteers for programs still looking for volunteers. It can help reinforce the aspirations of youth who attend. It can also reach potential business and private sector donors, so that during the year-end Holiday and tax season, many donors respond to direct mail calls for help from every tutor/mentor program in the nation.

The timing of the Spring conference is intended to celebrate the work of youth and volunteers who've connected in any tutor/mentor program during the school year. However its purpose is also to remind everyone that the students are only one year older and need support next year and for many more years if they are to successfully be entering jobs and careers by age 25. Thus, the conference seeks to build visibility for effective programs, and effective program practices so that good ideas are shared in more places and we reach more children and youth.

These conferences are a grass roots effort. Volunteers do much of the organizing and all speakers donate their time. Yet participants tell us this is one of the best conferences they attend. Therefore, we invite you to get involved. Please use the information on this web site to tell us who you are and how you'd like to help. Together, we can change the world for kids living in poverty.

If you'd like to help with the planning, be a participant, or learn more about this strategy, introduce yourself in this discussion, or email tutormentor2@earthlink.net
