Hello everybody,

We think that it might be beneficial, at least for our area (NorthEast Ohio), to establish a training school for mentors. The problem that we are coming across over and over again is that the majority of mentoship programs’ sponsors do not consider program coordinators’ and mentors’ training as being an essential part of the program. In some cases they do not see them as a part of the program at all.

Our idea is to set up a school on the basis of the university, which would perform a variety of training services: needs assessment and screening for mentors, orientations for mentors and coordinators, on-going weekly/monthly seminars, customized program design, materials design, activities design, parents’ involvement planning, program communication planning, physical space design for mentors' room, etc.

Further on, trained mentors would be placed to school chosen by the program sponsors as a ground for the mentorship program. Mentors and tutors from any local programs will be  able to attend the school. We feel that the involvement of the university would add professionalism and creativity to the approach to mentorship and thus, enhance the children’s and mentors’ positive experience.

Do you think there is a need for this type of school?

I would greatly appreciate any feedback,

Thanks

Hi Ana -

Welcome to the forums! I think there is definitely a need for this kind of program. I'm not sure the actual mentors would agree though. We attempt to provide training for our tutors/mentors but have a terrible time getting them to show up for our training sessions! Would your school be required? If the programs wanted their mentors to attend the program, how would they insure that they show up? Just some questions to think about.

Also, could some of this content be presented in an online environment (like an e-school)? This way it could be available to a wider variety of people.

Thanks Ariane!
We thought about all the problems you mentioned. One of the solutions - to require a certain amount of training before the start of the actual program. For example, if a mentor hasn't visit at least 4 sessions prior to meeting his mentee, s/he is not allowed to proceed with the program. This will cut off some of the volunteers, but those are, usually, not serious about volunteering and commiting for a year. Thus, we can reinforce screening. There will be some online courses through our Distance Learning for sure. The school won't be required but suggested - for the maximum impact. I believe, that people who really want to change the community would be willing to learn how to do it rather than just come and do whatever, specifically, when it comes to such fragile areas as edication and children.

I could not agree more! All to often, programs feel as though they are held hostage by their volunteers! This is a recipe for disaster. Mentors must understand that they are a part of a program and not some "fly-by-night" "coookie-fanoookie" endeavor.

This starts with our approach. We may lose some mentors, but all mentoring programs should fight obesity.

We want to be lean, mean, Mentoring machines!!
