Michael Tam of Hong Kong Baptist University was an intern at the T/MC during July and August 2006. Here are messages he posted:

Please come to support us~Thanks a lot!

June 29, 2006 - Hello, my name is Michael. I am 20 years old. I come from Hong Kong and study in the Hong Kong Baptist University. I participated in the internship programe organized by my university and am the intern of the T/MC for 7 weeks. History is my major subject. I am interested in studying it, especially modern history. I study modern Chinese, European, Hong Kong and Japanese Histories. In addition to this, I have taken some courses like Translation and Sociology. I feel glad that I can help those who need help.

June 29, 2006 - I think T/MC is new to Hong Kong people. There are lots of discussion forums in Hong Kong. However, they do not related to community services. The functions of these forums are confined to learning or academic purposes. Some public forums are opened for discussing current affairs, love, movies, dramas, idols or any other things.

I do not fully understand the situation in Chicago. Perhaps there are some differences between two places. The needy will seek social workers or government for help in H.K. Social workers and community centers are available for serving the poors and organize a variety of after-school activities for them.

The gap between the rich and the poor is one of the social problems nowadays in Hong Kong. The government is often criticized for its inadequateness in helping the needy. It would be better if the concept of T/MC can be introduced to more places outside the United States.

June 29, 2006 - Let me continue my story. I have been working in T/MC for several days. My job duty is to motivate volunteers to use T/MC in an attempt to make more people to be benefited.

How do I get started? Understanding the concept of the T/MC is the first step. It is an important thing that every volunteer have to do. I accomplish this by reading some documents, including discussion paper, proposals and reports. It makes me know the services provided by our society is lacking. In order to prevent our next genertion form going astary, education is the solution that we should adopt. The forum in T/MC provides a place for interaction of between people who need help and people who can help.

Althhough the job is challenging, it makes me feel satisfactory because I can make contributions here by promoting T/MC.

June 30, 2006 - I am now checking and repairing all broken links in the LINKS Section of the T/MC web site (more than 1000). We feel pleased to see that you can support our site by adding and rating the links. Also, you can report to us if threre are still any broken links.

July 12, 2006 - Hi, I am Michael. I have been working here for three weeks. I enjoy my life and cherish my experience in Chicago. Being encouraged by Daniel, I started writing journal weekly, reflecting my experience and feeling when I am working in the T/MC.

Learning the concept of the T/MC is the first thing that I have to do before starting my job. It is surely a challenged task because all the things are new to me. With the help of Daniel and Ariane, I understand more about the operation of the program after reading "Be a volunteer" at http://www.cabriniconnections.net/beavolunteer.html . It presented how to be a volunteer in a systematic way. All potential volunteers are cordially encouraged to read this first before participating in our program.

There are some differences between the situation of Hong Kong and Chicago. Most of the community services provided by charities are very much depended on government?s support. After chatting with Danniel, I understand T/MC helps to relieve the burden of the government and the poor by recruiting volunteers to help those who need help. I think it is our responsibility to share their burdens and this concept can be applied to Hong Kong where community services are still lacking.

I feel happy as I know what I am doing is meaningful. Please come to join us!

July 27 - Hi, everybody, I am Michael. Being encourged by Daniel, I have been created a blog at http://michaelcnt.blogspot.com/ to share my experience and views on T/MC while I am working here. Please feel free to come and I will keep u all posted.

Michael completed his internship at the end of the first week of August. We hope he and others will continue to stay involved with the T/MC through the internet, and through their Blogs. Dan Bassill, Tutor/Mentor Connection

Hello, I am Paul. I am the new intern from Hong Kong Baptist University and I study information systems. My hometown is Shanghai. I like what I study and I'm interested in many kinds of things like audio-visual arts and sports. I will stay here till August 10.

As Michael has introduced the situation in Hong Kong, I would say it is alike in mainland China. Needy people can only get help from the government and the welfare is not satisfying. There are still many problems to be solved and it is difficult to have organizations like T/MC in mainland China for some reasons. I believe that I will gain a better understanding of it during the time I am to spend here.

To begin with my job, I am going to go through all the related information here as much as I can. Hope I can make good contribution here.

I had a talk with Mr. Bassill yesterday. I raised some question and he helped me gain better understanding on the concept of T/MC.

I fixed some problems on the composition of the main page of the program locator. Mr. Bassill was glad to see that and proposed many ways to improve the experience of the users who visit the website. Some of them sound really challenging and need some systematic database/dynamic web skills to realize.

A part of his suggestion is that the OHATS could generate online reports on the collected data in a real-time way, and the data could be sorted in a more organized and smarter way(e.g. by editor) instead of listing all the data page by page. I totally agree that these improvements are meaningful and important to the users, but I don't know if I can handle some of them, although I do have some database/program skills. I will do some research on that to see if things are viable and if my abilities can realize something.

Please let us know once you have any suggestion.

Paul

These all represent the Tutor/Mentor Connection's aim of mobilizing talent from people throughout the world who will help create advertising and on-line education, that increases the number of people involved in helping youth living in poverty connect with the type of on-going adult support systems that can lead them through school and into jobs and careers.

If you are teaching media and communications at a middle school, high school, college or business, and are looking for a real world application for your teaching and learning, consider working with the Tutor/Mentor Connection and apply what you learn to help us in Chicago, and to help youth in the city and country where you live.
