| This is an introduction posted by John Hostney, of the Corporation for National Service. Good Afternoon: Thanks to Dan Bassill for encouraging me to get involved in this online forum. I work in Chicago with the Corporation for National and Community Service. That means I work for you. The Corporation is charged with engaging citizens from all backgrounds in service that meets community needs. Let me start the discussion by asking what can we do to eliminate poverty in this country? I am interested in what we can do together. Thanks. |

Posted Nov. 23, 2005 - My name is Ted Gibbs with the Office of Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn. I would like to echo some of the sentiments, which Dan Bassill commented on with his original post. Our office believes that Cesar Chavez can be an incredible example for young people and adults like to emulate in making a difference in the State of Illinois.
The mission of the Cesar Chavez Serve and Learn, which is administered by the Lt. Governor?s Office, is to instill an ethic of service in our young people. We believe that our service-learning program can create the leaders and mentors of the next generation. We would like to work with leaders of tutor/ mentor programs to learn how we can establish at atmosphere of service in Illinois.
What do you think the State of Illinois could do to increase the amount of volunteers participating in Tutor / Mentor programs? |
