I'm Dan Bassill, president of the Tutor/Mentor Connection and host of this web site. I've been leading volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs for more than 30 consecutive years. From 1974 to 1990 I did this as a volunteer while holding full time advertising management positions with Montgomery Ward. In 1990 I left Wards and converted the volunteer program to a non profit (Cabrini-Green Tutoring Program, Inc.), with myself in a paid leadership role. In 1992 I left that structure in 1992 and along with 6 other volunteers, created Cabrini Connections (Nov. 1992) and the Tutor/Mentor Connection(1993). At http://www.cabriniconnections.net you can learn about the Cabrini Connections program and its efforts to help 7th through 12th grade teens living in the Cabrini Green neighborhood of Chicago stay in school, graduate and be in jobs/careers by age 25. In all of the sections of this site, and in the links at http://www.tutormentorexchange.net and http://www.tutormentorconference.bigstep.com you can learn about the efforts of the Tutor/Mentor Connection to help programs like Cabrini Connections grow in all poverty neighborhoods of Chicago and other major cities. I look forward to getting to know all who visit this site and look for ways we can barter time, talent, ideas in efforts to help each other be more successful in our efforts to make this a better world for everyone, especially those who were born in poverty and have more challenges to succeed in school and careers. |

I'll add my introduction then:
I started my interest in mentorship programs with Big Brother Big Sister, have done work with education NGO's in Africa, and through my career I have worked in a number of capacities for FIRST (www.usfirst.org), in the US and South Africa, which works to inspire youth in science and technology through mentorship and intense teamwork.
I am interested long term in being involved in organizations that create mentorship programs, and to networ with the great people involved in mentorship organizations.

I have a special love for and expertise in Mentoring. I really appreciate what this organization is doing and look forward to participating!
I'm not sure if it would be in bad taste to leave my website address so I won't.
I do, however, look forward to getting to know you all and you getting to know me.
Thank you for the opportunity for being involved!

Welcome Will, Donel and others who have introduced yourself recently. This web site was opened to the public in October 06 with no advertising support beyond word of mouth. The number of visits to the site is nearly 4,000 a month and the number of registered users is approaching 100.
If you have not plotted the location of your organization on the guest map (home page) or submitted your web site link for the links library, please do. Then, I encourage you to participate as actively as you choose in turning the forums into a meeting place for tutor/mentor leaders from around the country...and the world.

I have been working with Daniel on Omidyar.net in general discussions and on AboutUs as a NetworkWeaver. The two of us and Habib Rose have started a project on "Social Network Analysis" and how that can be used by charity funders as a rating tool and therefore should included in what is funded.
We are just getting started and I was reviewing what Daniel has already accomplished. Anyone who would like to participate is welcome to join us at Aboutus.

David,
Thanks for introducing yourself . I'd like you to also look at http://cabrini.hopto.org/ which is a wiki set up by one of my volunteers to update our organization's technology plan.
In the Technology and Staff section you can see a list of projects, and volunteers who are working on these projects. This ranges from the volunteers supporting the hardware and server-based network at my 800 W. Huron location in Chicago, to volunteers who have created the various web sites that I operate from.
If you want, you can add a Social Network Analysis project to the list. As other people volunteer to work on this they can add their names as well.
This wiki is only a couple of weeks old, so the templates that would enable our volunteers to create profiles for themselves are not yet created. If someone else wants to create a volunteer profile format, borrowing from Razoo or another place, so T/MC volunteers can introduce themselves, that would be welcome.
You can see that the Social Network Analysis (SNA) project with Network Weavers is just part of T/MC, yet, just doing a network analysis of who the volunteers are who are working on T/MC and Cabrini Connections technology, would be a small demonstration of how we might map a much larger network.
The workspace where this is done can be on About us, or any other space. It just requires a link from our wiki to where ever the work is being done. At some point, a discussion within the T/MC would begin to focus on how we apply this to T/MC, CC work, while discussions in other organizations and/or networks would be focused on how they apply the SNA into their own organizations, which may have a different mission than TMC, or be located in a different city or country.

I was doing a search of Google today under "Montgomery Ward" which was the host of the original tutor/mentor program, which started in 1965 and "tutoring". I'm always curious to see if this leads me to former volunteers and students and/or new friends.
I found two links to articles written about or by former volunteers. One was written by Janna Graber and the other by Terry Hackett.
I'm trying to reconnect former students and volunteers with each other, via the Internet. If you know of volunteers or students who participated in the tutoring programs hosted at the Montgomery Ward Corporate headquarters in Chicago between 1965 and 2000, or who have been part of Cabrini Connections since then (or if you who have web sites or blogs, please introduce them here.
We also have community spaces set up at Myspace, Facebook, and Linkedin, so you and other alumni can also connect with us there.

Hello. My name is Amber and I am 23 years old. I recently began searching the Internet for ways in which the youth are provided resources for success. After poor guidance in our education, my younger sister and I decided to start a website. Being that we were raised in the Chicagoland area, I thought about how CPS is likely lacking in this area, and would like to eventually move into working in a non-profit promoting this cause. I have learned how important self advising and peer mentoring is through experience, and I want to serve as a mentor to many of my peers. I watched a '60 Minutes' segment about Millennials, which was my catalyst for starting the site. You can view our website at www.millennialmentors.com - and was hoping anyone could offer advice about how I can become an expert in advising and mentoring my peers into success. Thanks!

Dear all,
I may have had a different introduction to the field of mentoring/tutoring. Yet, there is a definite connection to the work you are doing. You see, I work with adults who are switching careers and returning to school after many years. I connect them with other adults who guide them through a process of preparation, studying and test taking to become certified teachers in the state of Wisconsin. Even though much seems like common sense, the need to learn how to tutor/mentor is a huge issue: how do we negotiate issues such as anxiety, what is the best strategy for adults, what about english language learners? There are contentious issues in high stakes testing. Our program is working one person at a time to help them achieve their goals and in turn, they see how they can help their children acheive as well. We would love to share what we know and learn from you as well.
en paz,
Camila Leffel |

| Hi, I am already making a difference as a member of a Hispanic group in Evanston, IL. But we need tutors to help us. We need bilingual tutors to teach computer classes. Is there a way to find people who want to do this in Evanston? |

Do you have a web site, or a blog, where you show what you're doing and what your needs are? This would be a first recommentation. If you have a web site or blog you can add the link to the Chicago area program links and that will help you get volunteers.
You also should attend the Tutor/Mentor Leadership and Networking Conference on May 29 and 30. There will be several workshops focused on Volunteer Recruitment, and the entire conference is intended to build a collaboration among multiple programs so we can generate more visibility for tutoring/mentoring and draw volunteers to all programs.
